Thanks for that information, - its just the sort of thing I need to hear! - will talk it through with my partner, if the bed is comfortable and he can get a good sleep - will be ok...we can find out where the best pool to swim is at, probably at one of the bigger hotels, the nearest would the best I imagine.

Just a comment on accomodation during APollo: If you take a single room (not shared) you will have a couch and an attached western style bathroom. The place will be clean and comfortable, and food will be available reasonably cheaply (including basic room service, nothing fancy). There will probably be a canteen in the hospital, and eating places closeby. There will be a cupboard and basic furniture in the airconditioned room.

I guess what I am trying to say is, during a hospital stay, it may be worthwhile for your partner to make the hospital a base. THe room will be comparable (and maybe more) to a 1500 rupee a room outside, there will be no transport problems to and fro from the hospital.

Another thing. Compared to hospitals in the West, an attendant has to run around a bit more in India, with papers and payments and stuff while the patient is in hospital. This involves making sure doctors instructions to nurses are being followed as well. The more critical the patient, the more imp this becomes. Yes, including in Apollo. I have a lot of experience with them in Hyderabad, besides other corporate hospitals in Delhi and elsewhere. Not Chennai, but I don't think it will be different.

Though this is not huge deal, given everything else, I suggest you consider this option too.

Slight correction: It will be a day bed and not a couch.

And they will give you clean sheets, pillow, blankets etc for it.

Plus TV which I think is there in all private rooms.

One thing: do have a look at some other similar rooms and push for a better room if you have to. It is sometimes crazy just getting a room, Apollo Hyderabad works at 110% capacity (as of 3 months ago) and they may push you into a closet unless you put your foot down. They tried it here, I told them that was 'not acceptable' with my Dirty Harry look on.

I visited annerobyn and her brother, who had surgery done in Apollo. Annerobyn stayed in the same room and was very comfortable. The rooms are star hotel standard. Better save your money and stay in a nice resort afterwards. I think Annerobyn also found that she wanted to stay with her brother as much as possible to give him company and moral support.

That said, she also went out and about in chennai and managed to see quite a lot of the city.

Inn Chennai on mount road has serviced apartments and nice rooms for about Rs. 3000.

About the swimming pool... I don't know anything very close by, but GRT hotel opposite residency towers hotel has one of the few indoor pools (which is very nice if you want to swim in the daytime and don't want to come out looking like a lobster ). It is superclean and quiet. They charge about Rs. 250, including towel and soap. Monthly subscription costs Rs.2000.

Kia ora
Thanks again Capt-majahan for your input.
Thank you to mirjamd for the hospital information - I think that my partner will look at staying with me.. - we may even look at staying at the Grt Hotel instead of the residency towers the first few days we are here - I definitely want to swim as much as I can b4 going into surgery - great advice and thank you again!
kind regards
Karen

Unfortunately I never visited Anne's brother in the hospital. However, I know that they were on a foreign-medical-tourism package which had been arranged for them by an agent in their own country.

The facilities they enjoyed, and the attention that they received, during the days that Anne's brother was in hospital for the opertation were, by all accounts exceptional, including even a visit from the Apollo founder and Managing director.

He spent a night or two back at the hospital, for a bout of food poisoning, in more ordinary acccomodation. By all accounts, this was fine, and more than adequate, but certainly lacking the luxury and attention of the 'VIP' section!.

It is perfectly reasonable, even a good thing, that hospitals such as this do have different grades of room for different depths of pocket.

I've visited an in-patient at Apolo on one occasion, certainly not in the VIP section, and I'd describe the room as fairly small, basic, but fine. What more does one need, either as the patient or the carer?

So, exactly how comfortable you are both going to be in the hospital is going to depend on how much you are paying --- but even at the very lowest level, I do not think you will be uncomfortable.

You're right Nick, there are of course different kinds of rooms in Apollo. I assumed they would have the same VIP rooms as Anne, being 'medical tourists'....

Checkers Hotel is another one near the hospital that you might look at. Apparently it has a roof-top pool --- but then there's going to be that searing sunshine.

Hi Nick, I think that we are in an international wing - platumim ward...so I think I will be well cared for and have no doubt about that! - thanks for your comments.

Yes as I said to Nick we will be in the Platinum ward of the hosptial and from what I have seen looks like nothing I have seen in NZ (very upmarket and modern) - not that I have been to any private hospitals here! - There are no photos of the attendants couch we can see on the website - but it probably is a very good option for my partner to use as accommodation. - thanks for the outside pool advice, I did not consider that at all! - we choose residence towers because of the rooftop pool and did not consider the heat factor! - I did notice a sort of shade cloth roof in the pcitures of R. towers we have booked....so might be ok - I think we will be in abit of shock with the weather at first as its winter here and always about 9-12 degrees C.!

Whoa! Luxury holiday, then?

...with some surgery thrown in

Couch or no couch in the photos, I'm sure they'll accomodate your partner. Make it clear to them that you expect them to so they have it sorted before you get admitted.

Mr. ploink stayed with me for a week in the Apollo in Delhi. We had a single room with attached bathroom, and, yes, TV, newspapers in the morning and in the afternoon,... I still remember the warm shower - I had had (mostly cold) bucket baths for almost three weeks (if I had been able to have one). I had the bed (I was the patient ), and Mr. ploink had the sofa bed (the sofa turned into a bed); they even would have made the bed for him in the evenings, but he made it himself. Mr. ploink ordered his food from the room service menu), there was a laundry service there, ... (In our case, our travel insurance took care of the bills, though.)
