Accommodation near Apollo specality hospital
Hello, We are looking for accommodation near Apollo speciality hospital in Mount rd, have looked online and there are a few hotels but very expensive. We would like to rent a short-term apartment for one week - with access to a swimming pool nearby - where would be a good swimming pool in Chennai!? - some of the larger hotels have them and we would go there if we have to, but trying to make our money stretch.
This is a great site and thanks to those who make it happen. |

Apollo Chennai is in a central and upmarket area, you will not get accomodation very cheaply in the immediate vicinity
But it is not too far from Mount Road, (a ten minute walk to reach it) which will have hotels to suit different budgets. You could even stay within a ten or fifteen minute autorickshaw ride and improve your options. Swimming pool close to Apollo... at the Connemara Hotel just off Mount road, I would think. Expensive. A week's apartment rental would be good, maybe Chennai-ites can tell you more I suggest browse the hotel section here first. And wait for a local to reply. Meanwhile, an indication of your budget would help |

Hello, thank you for getting back to me. We are looking at a budget of around $1500.00 per day or about $11200 (incl of taxes)- more of less. As I said I will in Chennai for orthopaedic surgery. I will be in hospital for most of the time, so something easy to get to and from the hospital would be good and a pool nearby would be a big bonus. We will then go south to recover and deapending on how mobile I am would like to again rent apartment that is comfortable in maybe Mamallpuram, or further south ( we could follow up this when we get to India) - Be able to swim in a pool is essential and don;t mind paying a daily fee to have access if the pool is good. (as in a resort)
We are coming along way for the surgery and I would be great to be able stay somewhere and recover. This is a long winded letter I know, but I would appreciate any advise from people living in the area, as its difficult to find what I am looking for online. Thanks again Karen |

is the second figure (11k) rupeees? If so, you are looking at close to five star rates, if not five star. Look at Taj Connemara. I believe it is the closest five star to the hospital. With todays rates, you might find INR11000 per day is not enough with food, though. But I am not sure. Last I stayed there was five years ago. If not, you will find good hotels in the vicinity, surely. |

you will not have the private messaging option yet.. since you just joined.
I think you have visited some apollo chennai threads. You could leave a disposable email address in one and request one of those members to respond. Suggest you create an email id for this purpose because it may be subject to spam. What I would do, for now, is ask apollo hospital realted questions directly in one of those threads (the accomodation one aside).. there are a lot of knowledgeable members from Chennai out here. |

if appollo speaciality is the one you are looking at - there is a relatively cheap hotel about 10 mins walk from there called Chamiers Park (i see it on the way to work everyday) however- it does not have a pool. AND, i have personally never stayed there- nor have any reviews of the place- so i would knock if off -except it might fall in your budget.
Another option - is the Star City (service apartments) and Chennai Inn (again-service apartments) Chennai Inn - is about 3 Kms from Appollo Speciality on mount road and Star City is about 2.5-3 Kms in T-Nagar - http://www.starcityhotel.com/locations_tnagar.html The park sheraton - which is about 2 kms from Appollo has a pool. You could also check out Raintree Hotel - which is a great place- and relatively close to Appollo (about 3 kms again)http://www.raintreehotels.com/ and they have a pool. If you talk to them saying that you are coming for an "extended stay" they might be able to work out a good deal. Hope the info was useful! Feel free to get in touch if you need anything else.

Hotel Raintree is the best bet, its not even 3km from the hospital just about 1.5 kms. Cost wise Park Sheraton would be more expensive

1,500 Rupees a day is barely going to get you into the restaurant of a five-star hotel, or even a four-star.
However, it should get you a good room at New Woodlands Hotel; a very pleasant, and good value, hotel, set back from the road on Radakrishnan Salai, near its junction (just at the western end of the flyover) with TTK Road. Before surgery it would be a few minutes by auto to the hospital; afterwards you'll probably need a car with strict instructions to go slowly. The hotel has a website. It also has a swimming pool. Google Maps, MapMyIndia and WikiMapia will give you online-resource to check out localities and distances here.

accommodation sorted.
Thanks, will go for the residency towers for the first few days b4 I go into hospital (all very scary, but remain positive!) - my partner will prob book into the new woodlands while I am in Hospital - we are going to stay at mamallapuram for a 5 days at a resort there and then look around for a aparmtent to rent, I think waiting til we are there and going and to look at what options are available would be the best idea - do you think there would be notices around local places of cottages or apartments to rent? - all going well we can plan another trip of the same if we can find good informaton beforehand - as don't want to be shifting around too much - would if be a good idea to start another thread? - looking for apartment near Mamallapuram?

Just a comment on accomodation during APollo: If you take a single room (not shared) you will have a couch and an attached western style bathroom. The place will be clean and comfortable, and food will be available reasonably cheaply (including basic room service, nothing fancy). There will probably be a canteen in the hospital, and eating places closeby. There will be a cupboard and basic furniture in the airconditioned room. I guess what I am trying to say is, during a hospital stay, it may be worthwhile for your partner to make the hospital a base. THe room will be comparable (and maybe more) to a 1500 rupee a room outside, there will be no transport problems to and fro from the hospital. (Edit after Nicks post below: And you will save money. On a hotel room and transportation too) Another thing. Compared to hospitals in the West, an attendant has to run around a bit more in India, with papers and payments and stuff while the patient is in hospital. This involves making sure doctors instructions to nurses are being followed as well. The more critical the patient, the more imp this becomes. Yes, including in Apollo. I have a lot of experience with them in Hyderabad, besides other corporate hospitals in Delhi and elsewhere. Not Chennai, but I don't think it will be different. Though this is not huge deal, given everything else, I suggest you consider this option too. |

Yes, there is a canteen at Appolo Speciality. Just simple S. Indian Veggie stuff, though, I think, and a limited home-cooking-type selection --- but the prices are OK.
