Best Place: I loved the Taj, loved Varanassi even though I had the worst 24 hour bacterial poo episode ever and loved Bikaner - great food.
Worst Place: Gohrakpur - it was my first intro to India. I was quite overwhelmed plus I had to fight in a queue to get a train ticket for about 3 hours. Man it was ordinary. I've still got a lot to see. So my list will change. |

Favourites:
Varanasi - for the sheer "watchability" factor. You can sit on the ghats all day and never get bored. Dharamsala/McLeod Ganj - being surrounded by the warmth and kindness of the Tibetans and their culture. Palolem Beach, Goa - absolute paradise. Udaipur - beautiful, uncrowded place and great hotel to relax at (Mahendra Prakash) Kerala Backwaters - peaceful serenity. Least Favourites: Agra & Amritsar - apart from Taj & Golden Temple, nothing much else on offer. Places I have yet to visit: Rishikesh/Haridwar/Mussoorie/Dehradun/Shimla Pushkar/Jodhpur/Jaisalmer Gwalior/Orccha Bodhigaya Kolkata Lucknow Hampi Varkala/Trivandrum Madurai Putty

Favorite? Oh there's SO many. Pondy, Pune, Calcutta, Kerala, Mysore....
I should add that I've never been to Agra or Varanasi, 2 of the most "disliked" spots. Raxaul (Bihar-Nepali border) has got to be one of the most depressing spots imaginable. Amazing the logic - instead of saying "everyone has to come through here, why don't we make it nice and they might stay a day or two? after all they're tired from all the travel," the logic is "everyone only spends one night here so who cares if it's crappy." Yeah, that's WHY they only spend one night! Another missed opportunity.
