Kotagiri would maybe be the favourite right now (haven't seen that much of India however!) and Delhi would be least favourite

My experience wasn't friendly Malvin far from it, I'm sure other Punjabi cities are friendly, jullundhar on this occasion wasn't, we spent around 4 hours trying to find a bus amongst very unhelpful people and having stuff thrown at us as a mentally handicapped guy tried to take shelter from the bunch of idiots (40-50 people) who were chasing him around throwing stones, cans orange peel at him.
It was the most terrible few hours I've ever had in India, enough to put me off going back there. Sorry Melvin if it's your home town and I'm sure others have a different tale to tell, for me it was a terrible place! IMHO

hi cybesrhippie,
that must have been terrible experience for you and i`m sure that it would be the same feeling for me in a strange land.
are you sure that mentaly ill people elsewhere in india or in southasia are treated better?
jullundher isn`t my home town, but i`m punjabi.normaly, the people who have to been to punjab, called them the most hospitable in whole of south asia and not only india.

Cyberhippie---That sounds like a bad experience...I've never been to Jalandhar though. The only place in Punjab that i have been to is Chandigarh, for the Rock Gardens...they are quite impressive. hah.

I notice that alot of areas have been mentioned a lot, a lot of people don't like Delhi (I've been to Delhi and I like it, I like crowded areas...I live in Kentucky, which is pretty much rural..so it is a change... Varanasi is a favorite of many people, I have heard that Varanasi is a very lively city, and though quite more crowded and dirty than some other cities, it has a very nice *charm*...I have never been there though...The Himalayas are a favorite of many too. I like the Himalayas, and I have been to Ladakh and Garwhal. I went to Mussoorie a few years ago, the places around it were nice...but it was sooo commercialized because of so much tourism. The untouched places like Dhanaulti which were around it though were nice. Another place that alot of people have mentioned are the Nilgiri Hills, I would like to go there, but the only place i've been to in South India is Goa..which was fun. I went during the monsoon seasons, so there were not as many tourists.

If you plan on going to India or if you live in India and plan on going on vacation, what place(s) are on your list?

I'm going in 2 years. I want to take a tour of Kinnaur, Lahaul/Spiti, and Kullu in Himachal Pradesh. That's the one state that I have not been to in Northern India (the rest i have been to...JK, UP, Punjab, Haryana, Uttaranchal), and those 3 'regions' in that state aren't commercialized and so yeah.

I didn't like Bulandshahr(in western Uttar Pradesh) not because it was 'bad' or anything, but because there is really not much to do there. It's crowded and dirty, and it's not really lively. It's just..boring...but that's my opinion. I went to Leh last month, it was nice.
Overall, I like the Himalayas the most in India, from what I have seen so far.
