I'm scheduled to leave for Delhi on the 7th. I will be spending the first two weeks in non-touristy areas, but the third week I was going to travel in the Delhi-Agra-Jaipur-Udaipur area.

My concern is that I am a 24 year old American woman (very fair) and I was planning on traveling alone. I don't know if I should cancel my plans or not. Any recommendations?

I think it's been noted here that area is nowhere near this current attack, if that's your concern.

There are many women of all types on this board traveling there solo or in pairs or in groups whether of the same or mixed sexes, just search around the site for their views. This would be a good place to start: Blondes- to dye or not to dye? & women's wear, women's safety etc . That whole "India For Beginners" (sub-) forum isn't a bad place to start anyway: http://www.indiamike.com/india/india...eginners-f122/ .

Sorry if I sound a little curt, but this ongoing situation is keeping us all rather busy of course. Have a great trip, I see no reason as such why you wouldn't.

ps If your concern now is would you be targeted for being a single American, no, I'd say there's extremely little chance of that. Well, people might be after your dollars as usual, LOL

But seriously, there's no reason for Americans or Brits or anyone to suddenly feel targeted now. India isn't like that, at all. And do visit its outstanding mosques and whatnot as you should other temples and monuments and neighborhoods etc., they're not to be missed and there's absolutely no reason not to.

And pps Pompey, Thailand is another personal if much briefer love. I'm sure you'll get in by then (Don't you get a little tired anyway of these shots of cranky tourists muttering about some strike. Yes, annoying, no doubt, but, er, maybe these people are on strike for something, not to mention for good reason? I mean really, yesterday there was some chap on the news going Phuket! You get me to Phuket! or something, I know where my solidarity lies. Get a cab to town or so, make do as best as you can & who knows if you might not run into some unexpected fun. Visit Brighton instead -- and mutter about your national strikes with any luck.)

Anyway, don't get me started. Oh, you just did

I'll be landing in Delhi on December 2. I don't think there's anything to worry about. The terrorist will do as they do, and I'll continue to do as I do.

Great thread idea

Hmmm...Unfortunately, the status of my trip that's happening in 2 weeks or so depends on my company. I'm spending the first week on business and then 2 weeks on "vacation" . If the company (or the state dept) thinks it's not safe, then I can't go Mind you, I'll be way north of Bombay, but you know how that goes.

I'm a NY'er - after the sept 11 attacks, I was deeply touched that folks made an effort to come to NYC after the attacks. I'd hate to have these cowardly terrorist actions in bombay to stop me from visiting India. On the other hand, I have received a few texts from friends *in India* asking me if I'm still coming because of the current situation If anything, they are worried because I'll be a business traveler for the first section of the trip (staying in a luxury hotel in New Delhi) and also because the tensions within the religious communities may increase as more details emerge and (possibly erupt).

Who knows? I mean, if I had a crystal ball things would be different, life would be different. All I know is, I have been waiting (impatiently) to go back to India for the last 11 months.

Stop fretting, really. The distance from Delhi to Mumbai must be about twice as far as it is from London to Edinburgh - London had all those london underground bombings a few years back, I don't know how far you live from London but I bet you feel perfectly safe at home!

Theophania, don't worry about being single or blonde or female, be sensible and you'll be just fine. there's a thread on here called "Blondes to dye or not to dye and women's wear, women's safety etc" which you'll find interesting. And before you read the thread, no you don't have to dye your hair!

I'm definitely not cancelling my next trip to India, in fact I wasn't even thinking about going to Mumbai, but I may do so now, just as an "Up yours, pal" to the terrorists. Can't have the little @*$"*s thinking they have won can we?

We are planning to go ahead with our temp 1 year move on December 15. I am nervous as my children all have very blonde hair and are unmistakably American. I'm trying to get my head around the whole thing, but it seems to just keep coming back to the fact that you can't predict the unpredictable - which is a weird way to put it, but it is just hard to make sense of something so senseless.

Probably your biggest risk is people wanting to cuddle them all the time and stroke their hair & pinch their cheeks (I'm not kidding either, can be a real drag on your kids). Seriously, there is no anti-Americanism there or anything, or certainly not in general anyway, rather pro if anything you'd think. "Ah! US! [Or fill in any place of origin here.] Yes, very good, sir, ma'am!"

I mean the people who staged this and whoever they may have been certainly don't represent any wider or general popular feeling or so, witness any Indian reactions to it too.* And as you are bound to find out the moment you step off the plane. (Yes, I'm sure some in their gloomy holes will secretly praise the event. It follows that you'd be very unlikely to ever run into them, let alone so much as lay a finger on you.)

* And in all of this of course, please don't forget it's mostly Indians that have been killed or otherwise affected here, and regardless of whatever their political or religious or whatever affiliation.

try and meet other travellers in the budget hotel district in delhi perhaps i know my mom a 50 yo indian women is travelling alone from that date and will be in delhi probably for the 1st few nights, i am sure you'll be fine and could even link up with other single travellers if your visiting similar place. I will also be there around that time, try delhi meet ups perhaps. If its a dream to go and you booked allready you mustnt let the recent tragedy sway you, everyone will be friendly i am sure and the well troden tourist routes are very safe i am sure. All the best sweety.

Well it looks like my company cancelled my trip. I understand why they're doing it, but it is a real let down. I've been looking forward to this trip since last January. Also, I was going to my friend's wedding in Chennai and catch some sights for 2 weeks. Good thing I got travel insurance I am super bummed. This also means I now have to spend Christmas with my family I need to go get some whiskey and some dosa to ease my pain.

I can only imagine, Cardamom What a bummer indeed. Can't you get them to just postpone it a little? I imagine all international traffic to be back up if not yesterday then tomorrow anyway.

Yeah, I'm gonna keep "researching" this situation this weekend and see what's up on Monday. I'm going to reach out to some of my colleagues who are working there now to see what their impression on the situation is. She did say we could go again in Feb/March if the situation "improves".
