Will you be cancelling your coming holidays to India?
I will be flying to Delhi on December 14 to visit my daughter who is living in Jaipur this year, and my husband will be joining us a week later. We will spend a week in Kerala as well. We want to see our daughter and we definitely will not be cancelling this trip. I live in the New York metropolitan area and remember only too well what it was like here on 9/11 and during its aftermath. I knew people who died on 9/11. The scenes from Mumbai I am watching on TV now bring back all of those feelings, and my heart goes out to all the citizens of Mumbai and of India. After 9/11, the support from people worldwide was very heartening. I was somewhat afraid for several months after 9/11 every time I went into New York, but I kept going. My husband works there and my daughter was in University there. She also studied in London and lived very near where the London subway bombings had occurred one year previously. She studied Urdu last summer in India. She is in Jaipur now studying Hindi, which is what she wants to be doing at this time in her life. Through all of this, I have realized that we live in a very scary world, but as others have said, if the terrorists can keep any of us from doing what is most meaningful to us in life, then they have won. I believe that we all must continue living the best and most courageous lives we possibly can, trying to learn about and understand other peoples of the world, and that doing so is the only way to ultimately combat this kind of evil.

I'm here for the next four weeks and not heading back early.
But, to be totally honest, this is nothing to do with not wanting to let the terrorists win or showing support to Indians. I don't mean that to sound harsh, as of course I have massive sympathy for those directly affected but the thought of leaving hasn't even entered my mind - I'm staying because the individual risk to me is low and I'm keen to carry on seeing India. Plus it's expensive to change plans and I won't have anything to do back home. Most people here in Palolem seem to think the same. Possibly if I had a family I might think a bit more about it but probably not, unless I was heading back to Mumbai. Same thing happened in London after the tube bombings - everyone at the time said Londoners were showing their resolve against the terrorists by getting on the tube in the following days and weeks but, to be honest, we had little choice anyway and people just get on with their lives. Back then of course, everyone also thought that the tube would be the safest place to be but there was an attempted attack just a week or two later. |

What kind of friend would i be if I dropped India now?
I was stationed in Iraq 2004 untill the end of 2006, I didn't bow down to those criminals then and won't do it now. If we "drop" India or in a lesser sense Mumbai now THEY will have won. Don't let this happen, Robert

India needs us now more than ever as this kind of atrocity is surely partly designed to affect the tourist trade and Indias economy.
Arriving in mumbai on way to goa in feb and these cowardly weasels will not stop me or my family. Solidarity with India |

It is gratifying to see you guys being so positive and continuing with your trip to India.
As cliched as it may sound, if we stop going about our lives, the murderers win. |

I'm going ahead with my plans...

Fly into Delhi, do the Golden Triangle, go home to Goa, spend time in Mumbai and fly back from Mumbai. I'm an Indian. My fiancee is American. She's at home for Thanksgiving in MI. Talking to her on the phone I could sense the apprehension in her voice. Her parents were concerned with the Bolivia and Peru trips, so they'd have some real concerns with her going on this one! Heck, even my mom doesn't want me to come home now. MY MOM... who would want me to fly home every weekend if I could now wants me to stay away! We'll have an honest talk when my fiancee returns on Monday. If she feels uncomfortable with going on this trip, I'll probably cancel her ticket - not even sure that's possible! I AM GOING. (As my Dad said) - Just be cognizant of your surroundings, avoid crowded places if possible, and live your life without fear. I know the last part is hard at this moment, but I'm going to try! |

We leave for Mumbai in about 3 weeks and a resounding YES! to keeping our travel plans. Our itinerary threads us in and out of Mumbai -using it as a base to travel north and south. We don't really have the funds for staying at a hotel like the Taj but since our first night in Mumbai happens to be my husband's birthday, I booked a room at the Taj for our first Mumbai stay as a birthday treat. I don't know if the Taj will even be ready for guests in time, but we're considering staying somewhere else - but a part of me wants to show support to the owners & staff anyway... We'll figure that all out - But nothing will stop us from going on our much anticipated trip to India!
