It's certainly encouraging to read all the positive responses in this thread.
Unfortunately, IMers don't seem to be representative of all Indian tourists. Times of India (print edition, December 2) reports that roughly 25% of inbound flight and hotel reservations have been cancelled since the Mumbai attack. The double whammy of the global financial crisis and the Mumbai attack will have a profoundly negative impact on the Indian tourism industry, I fear. Looking on the bright side, for those who come, there will be lots of bargains available. |

I have not canceled as of yet, but if India goes to war with Pakistan, I will. I know many others who have said this also. I know people in India are angry, but hopefully they will make a thoughtful, measured response.

I wonder how many of the cancellations are work-related travel? You can't send employees to places with on-going threats and advisories.

It's debatable whether folks are more angry with their own Politicians laxity than with the origin of the species right now. The fact that Benazir was slain and in Mumbai foreigners' may have mitigated the ire against the Pakistan Govt. and shifted perceptions. Otherwise we might have already seen a missile response. Things have definitely shifted and the close involvement of US/Israel/UK agencies, has been a grace on the whole sad scenario. It this is one of those moments that can move us all to higher ground, or suck us deeper into the quagmire. Let's not think war.

Two weeks to our departure and no signs that we will be canceling. We will only cancel if another incident (and I pray not) takes place between now and then.
Scared? YES; Excited? YES;

I doubt if any incident has you name specifically written on it so you know, take advantage of the opportunity now presented to dissolve some fear, and make some deals because you'll be alright and then say after it's all tucked up back home safe and sound. 'What was I worried about' Now you've set yourself up to a public test of courage. Yeah! though I wandered in the fear of..

Why? Something that happens before you leave home is something that won't be happening while you're there.

Paleface, no need to be mean, I certainly hope that no incident in India or any parts of the world has my name on it, I really don't think that anyone is specifically after me or my family to kill us... But thanks for the good wishes.

I don't understand why so many of you have to be so rude and insensitive towards some of the members that for some human reason feel scared due to the horrible events that India has gone through this year, specifically last week. I am sure that I am not the only person with worries and concerns about my (and my family) up coming trip to India, perhaps I am one of the few brave ones to admit to it. Thank you for your understanding and support towards the no so brave ones, I suppose we can only wish we had your courage. |

Warnings over the years
My family and I are coming to India in Dec and are looking forward to the trip. These events make me think about the warnings that we received over the years about to the USA.
A few hours before my first flight to the US in 1980 (I came here as a student) a family friend visited our house and told us that a friend of his had witnessed a man being knifed to death on the streets of NY City - he added some graphic details. (Crime rates in NYC were much higher then). I cam anyway. My college friends often said "Take care" which is the equivalent of goodbye. I literally thought that they were warning me about crime so I asked one of them what precautions I should take. Then a few years later a friend of my wife was relieved of his gold jewelery (large gold necklace) at knifepoint on the subway when they accidently got on the wrong train and found themselves in uptown Manhattan. My wife and I were moving to the suburbs of NYC and he told us to avoid the NYC subway. We did not listen to him and my wife worked in NYC for several years in uptown Manhattan and rode the subway! My elderly parents were scheduled to leave the US and fly through Newark on September 15, 2001. After 9/11 my mother was in such a state of shock that she could not bear the thought of flying especially through Newark. They had to extend their stay by a few weeks so that they could reroute through Houston. For several months we had friends in India warn us to stay away from Manhattan. We did not listen to them and we will not be listening to our friends who have asked us to stay away from Mumbai. |

Hombre, anyone who appreciates The Obscene Bird of Night including it's impressions of Latin American mysticism is not a person I would wish to be mean to - I may not have realised you had children accompanying you. There's that insight by the old man approaching his death 'I had a lot of worries in my life, most of it never happened'

I was supposed to leave for India next day after the terror attacks. I have to admit that I had lots of doubts, but here I am - happy and safe enough in Pushkar
My plan was to travel in India until 28 February, but now I'm concidering coming back beforehand. Don't want to make a decision yet. |
