Will you be cancelling your coming holidays to India?

Hi all,

This might come across as an insensitive and self centered question to ask at a time like this when one thinks of the hundreds of innocent lives at stake in Mumbai and the agony and anguish of all the families of the victims..Not least the shock and pain felt by all in Mumbai and India..My prayers and thoughts reach out to all first and foremost..

At the back of mind I cannot help but think of the holiday my wife and I have been dreaming of for the past 12 months, for which we are due to fly out to Mumbai, just 2 weeks from now. My wife is Finnish and she really does stand out a lot in India (I am Indian). I am pining to go to Mumbai, my birthplace, hometown, where all my friends and family are, to be a part of this. On the other hand, I worry about the safety of my wife. We are going to Kerala, which is about as safe a place as you can get in India. She ofcourse, being the pragmatic Finn that she is, is still quite keen to go, but this attack is so unprecedented, so shocking and pulled off so easily (apparently) that I feel it could happen again..

I really don't know what to do..

What are the others on this board going to do? I'd be interested to hear your views.

Thanks

Diverting Away From Mumbai

We will be leaving for India on December 10 for a month long trip. We will be in India for the first time. We fly into New Delhi and will fly out of Mumbai. I have tried to change our departure city to New Delhi to to avail. North West Airlines will not change our ticket without an exhorbitant fee, almost as much as a one new ticket would cost. Originally we were going to spend out last 4 days in Mumbai at the Hotel Suba Palace, which I beleive is kitty-corner to The Taj. We will no longer be staying in the Colaba district. I am trying not to panic and remain flexible, looking at places within a days driving distance to Mumbai to spend out last 4 days. We are very noticable Americans.

This will take Mumbai a long time to recover from. When I read that this horrendous act of terrorism had struck Mumbai I instantly felt the same fear and emotions that I did when the World Trade Center was struck by terorists. When that happened I was also out of the country on a little island in the Philippines. I know how it is to be frightened for friends and family, as well as hunanity itself.

In 1993 had a very close call when the terrorists targeted Air India bldg with a car bomb. I and my wife are coming in Feb for five weeks and no terrorist is going to stop me. Will be spending 2 weeks in Mumbai and then Kerala and Goa.

I would think twice about going to Iraq, Afghanistan and a few places in Africa at the moment, but not anywhere else.

Its good to be realistic, its not good to become a hostage to your own fear.

Terrorism is everywhere and no one can predict where it will surface next time. Whether it is India or any other country, I wont change my plans just because of this type of incidents.

Cancelling merely hands a victory over to the terrorists.
I may even change my plans and include Mumbai to show solidarity with the Mumbaites!
(is that the word?)

This is so heartening to read, if tourism still continues in India it would be because people have such large hearts rather than anything else.

Wow! I never even thought about that but it is a fantastic and kind notion... I have seen Mumbai inhabitants referred to as Mumbaikers on the TV here in USA. Anyway, I will definitely be getting on that plane December 8th headed to New Delhi. Bombay wasn't part of my itinerary, but maybe now it will be.

Cancelling? No way!

We're flying on to Mumbai on Tuesday 2nd December and spending 5 weeks in India.

Having grown up in Birmingham during the 1970's we were constantly under the shadow of IRA terrorism and had no choice but to live our lives as normally as possible.

I'm due to fly out on Sat 13 Dec. At the moment I'm apprehensive but that's mainly because the crisis in Mumbai is still ongoing right now as we speak. I will be touring mostly the main tourist circuits - Delhi, Golden Triangle, Varanasai, a week in Goa and one overnight stay in Mumbai as I fly out of there.

I recently saw references on this forum to security risks in Goa over the New Year. One can only hope that security will be stepped up throughout the country as a result of Mumbai especially as it's coming into the height of the tourist season. I just hope the current crisis in Mumbai will be resolved as quickly as possible and that it doesn't deter tourists from visiting this tremendous country and its people.
