Holla, I'm broke and I was wondering if $1000 is enough to survive in India ( I plan on camping out + staying in hostels, and eating one cheap meal a day). I am going to back pack by cheap transportation, or foot.....
Thanks. ![]() |

The crows will peck at your under nourished body...
Seriously i dont think it would, india is a place where u need to keep your health strong. if you dont eat much and camp out a lot you will be in danger of gettimg ill, india isnt as clean as san fransico. Your immune system wont be used to it over there, you would probaly get ill and have to go home or cut short your trip. |

If you cannot increase your budget, then curtail your planned stay by half. This should see you through.

Re: Will $1000 keep me alive for 6 months in india

It is not too hard to survive on one meal a day for a month or so. I have done it a few times for 4 weeks at a time and it did me no harm. As long as you eat the right foods and drink loads of water you should be ok. Also keep in mind that if you pass a Sikh Gurdwara drop in. They serve free food throughout the day and can also provide accomodation. |

Hmm. Why, what's the point? You won't be able to do anything interesting.
Staying in the odd Sikh Gurdwara is fine, but taking advantage of their hospitality isn't. Either stay at home or save more money. Sorry to put a downer on you, buit be sensible. RTP

india has a lot of people who go without food, I dont think it needs those who are there on a holiday to take advantage of a free kitchen just to save money.
I understand what you are saying shere but I also think it is taking advantage. They have $1000 , stay for a couple of months. |

Sorry Shere, I disagree with you 100%.
Sikh hospitality is among the finest I have ever seen (see my recent post), but abusing it to prolong at a trip to India is completely wrong. I also feel it always appropriate to leave a donation at a Gurdwara that amounts to the cost of a basic hotel. After all, it is still pennies when you convert from Western currencies. Our friend, on his $1000 budget, would not be able to do this. That, as far as I am concerned, is taking advantage. |

I also agree with Rob. Everytime I've been to a Gurdwara, I've always left a donation. I just wouldn't feel right using their facilities without contributing something back, especially since those kitchens run off donations.

Yes leave a donation if you want to. But the concept of langar does not require this nor should you feel compelled to leave a donation.
Most of the larger Gurdwara have huge estates attached to them and are self suifficient. |

It seems as if you can do it according to some replies.
But, opensea, would you really enjoy yourself, living such an ascetic lifestyle for 6 months. imagine not getting drunk or high or whatever your vice may be for 6 months. perhaps no mangoes. maybe no chance to see a tiger in the wild. not even any ayurvedic treatments. no ear cleaning. my 2 cents |

This "ask and it will be given" mentality reminds me of the show "The Simple Life" and its sequel. Does anyone really want to be like Paris Hilton and Nicole?
