Nothing wrong with the West, I like the west.
I dont' care what religion or culture people follow in the west or any other country. But why spew hatred towards Indians and their religion ? I see it everyday in BBC news, Washington post, NY Times etc... I can't think of anything Indians or Hindus have done against white folks. |

stop the mudslinging, please?
i regret posting this poll. i was just curious to see which candidate IMers preferred. I did not know that posters would be allowed to comment after they vote. now its turning into a mudslinging fest..
i think we all agree that politicians all over the world say what they need to, in order to get elected. no difference between the conservatives in the US and India's BJP. Both of them have used religion effectively to win elections. However, one can only hope that they do the try to run the country based on religious beliefs. The BJP when in power never destroyed the Babri mosque (which they claimed was built over a Rama temple) and now lets hope Bush dosen't get too far along forcing his religious beliefs on the people in a country whop constituion was based religious freedom. iyers, india's hertiage is built around a bunch of foreign invasions anyway. a visit to goa will reflect the influence of the portuguese and the mogul influence is reflected all over north india. most indians are proud to take credit for these as part of our "heritage" . thanks to the british, india has the railways. it may not be heritage but solid infrastructre that may have never built by the corrupt politicians who followed. I think there is nothing stupid about secularism. its what made america great and will be crucial for india to achieve its full potential. hinduism have survived for 5000 years, survived the rule of aurangazeb, and does not need to govt's help to survive. |

This is the garbage that's taught in the west about British rule in India, just like Japanese textbooks about their role in WW2, they were only there to built a East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere..." Fact is the British built railroads to connect Military Cantonments to speedily move troops and put down revolts. They also cut the thumbs of weavers in Bengal to destroy the Indian textile Industry. Very peaceful people the British, they created forced famines in India in the 1890's and during world war 2 in 1943 (Bengal famine), just like the Irish Potato Famine also staged by them. When the British left India in 1947, India's literacy rate was a whopping 11%, and total Electricity Generation was 1500 MW ! (Versus 65% and 120,000 mW today). Exporting India's raw cotton and iron core, and dumping value added products in return, Britain prevented India from Industrializing. For the Trillions of Dollars stolen by the British, India could have paid German or Japanese Engineers to build far better and far more railroads.l India is not a real secular country anyway, more about appeasing extremists that spew every kind of hate and venom against Hinduism. You are right the corrupt socialist politicians that ruled India did nothing for the country. Nationalists like the BJP is exactly what India needs for rapid Industrialization. |

I think people would better understand the vote if they looked at the alternative facing them in the vote. Kerry represented the old failed ideology warmed over not to mention the values or the lack of it of Hollywood. Look at the exit polls and the motivations cited. If you have to chose between perversion and incompetance, what is the choice? Now some people will choose the great grandson's nephew of a Gandhi or some strumpet of a girl that laid one as an alternative to the BJP's institutional momentum. But, that is wishing on a star too. You have to have an alternative theory to overthrow an existing one. However, we can now look forward to the democratic party throwing up Hillary. Vote Libertarian if you believe a physician's first duty is to do no harm..

One organisational and one political point:
India managed to run a paperless , uncontested election and ultimately appointed a head of state from a minority religion. I think that a lot of countries , not only the US, could learn from this. |

'Bush won on fear alone, in spite of the fact that terror just isn't happening in the US.'
and the same thing is happening in australia. The howard govt is pushing the fear buttom with warnigs of non-existent terrorism. |

How on earth did Howard get re-elected anyway? If Blair completes the triumvirate next year, we are all pretty much screwed.

Brian, no Indian election is without controversy. I have observed this in the countryside in one of the more developed states in India not just in Bihar. One has but to read the excellent Indian news media to catch this even secondarily. What I would praise is the logistics of such a massive operation in such demanding conditions. When one sees villagers walk long distances to vote it makes one feel ashamed to see the low turnouts in developed nations..

Well now the election is over and Bush had an easy win. I think this result reflects the selfish ignorance of most Americans who are only concerned with preventing another terrorist attack on their home soil. These same Americans probably never travel outside of their country and they are oblivious to the fact that Bush has completely destroyed the country of Iraq and increased the worldwide terror risk 10 times. And all because of his and his Daddy's personal grudge and their greed. Sure who cares how the Palastineians and Iraqi's and other muslim people feel. I fear that Bush will go down in history as they person responsible for WWIII, but the history books will report the instigators to be the Arab people.
