white teeth

I have never been to india, but I have noticed that my Indian friends here in the USA and all pictures I have seen show Indians, no matter what their economical status is with very white teeth. Is their a relationship to the diet, or do I only see a selection?

Call it VICCO power

Laloo has promised that his next items to be introduced in the Indian trains, after the disposable clay cups, include the neem stick too.

Meswak and neem sticks (Chewing stick) is used widely in the rural India. This is twig cut from the plants, something of the size and shape of a pencil. Chew one end of the stick and it becomes like a sort of brush. The stick has some kind of antiseptic and medicinal properties.

The urban wallahs use toothpastes made out of the plant extracts.

Babool has a funny (sour) taste. They say they don’t add sugar in their toothpaste. Sugar is an unnessessary content in toothpaste. People are adding sugar just to make the children (and adults too) like the taste. Sugar in fact does the negative effect of cleaning.

Vicco is great. But that advertisement is a bit strong. No one can bite a sugarcane stem like that

Also almost all the toothpaste companies sell tooth powder too. People use fingers to use toothpowder instead of brush.

I use Meswak toothpaste. It tastes spicy

If you look at poor Indians living by the side of the road, you will see them brushing their teeth for at least 10 minutes in the morning, I've noticed this a few times in India.

Maybe not lots of coffee, but god knows gallons of chai get consumed and tea stains teeth too. But like Steven says, most people are fanatic about cleaning their teeth--no matter their status.

Also may be the veg. food habit. Oral health is better maintained with non meat eating. Human teeth is 'designed' for veg food, unlike the sharp teeth of carnivorous.

....may be one of the reasons...

My local grocer is planning to sell neem sticks. Small world.

Aren't human teeth pretty well adapted to both tearing and grinding?

I thought exactly the same thing, so many of the Indian people I met have stunningly white teeth. And then I was sitting in a rickshaw on Luz Church Road yesterday, waiting for friends who were buying clothes, and looked at the teeth of many of the people walking buy (boy, do I lead an exciting life). I saw some pretty horrific sites at times - whole front teeth missing, one woman with a single blood-red fang protruding from her mouth, no more.

I get the feeling that my initial impression (i.e. everyone has great teeth) was simply because of the type of people I was meeting (i.e. those involved largely in dealing with tourists).

Cheers,

Scott

Chewing Paan has other interesting effects on the health, like dying of mouth cancer

I read in the paper yesterday that Southern India has the highest rate of tobacco-related cancers in the world

It may not be as dangerous without the toabacco but betel nut is carcinogenic.

For one Dark skin will make teeth look White. Yeah, Contrast.
But haaving that said I met a indian person yesterday and was staring at a set of beautyfull Perfect teeth. Might be allot of Indians just eat really healthy. But I think it is the chewing stick too...
Does the stick have a name?

By the way I did some research today...
And my discovery scared me...
Normal tothpaste such as "Colgate" etc includes a kind of chemical sugar called saccharin...

This sugar is 600 times sweeter than "normal" sugar and has shown to develope cancer on animals....

Time to change toothpaste for me anyways....
the food industry is MAD SIENCE.

check the documents bellow for further info....
