Where to be for Diwali

Wondering where's the best place for Diwali, which is Oct, 23-25, I've been told.

Also, will it be difficult to travel around that time (trains, guests houses full). We'll be around Sikkim/Darjeeling/Varansi.

Thanks for such an informative sight; members are really helpful!

In 2001 I spent it on Gokarna Beach in Karnataka, an amazing sights as thousands of people descended on the beach for a great, and very friendly and relaxed, festival.

I would second Darjeeling due to the lovely customs etc....it is a delight to be there! One day the boys, next day the girls and on the last day a mixed group goes around houses singing songs in the line of carols......and collect $$$ and sweets etc....oh the sight of houses lit up with oil-lamps!!! WOW, you will definitely get a very 'festive' feel!

I will also be in Jaipur on the 24th. Any suggestions of where to enjoy the Diwali festival without too many crowds or too much chaos? Thanks, derek
