You all seem like a very well-travelled, cosmopolitan bunch. Where else have you been? And which countries where your favourites?
I'm pretty new to travelling but here's my list so far: I live in England but have travelled around Thailand Cambodia Vietnam Holland France Greece I should be able to add India, Nepal and Laos to that by the end of the year. ![]() Apologies if this thread's been done before, btw. I did a search but couldn't find anything.

Hi Dr., I've traveled to too many places to list
, and I have enjoyed every trip; if it's not the scenery it's the people, or the art, or sometimes I can't say why. I'd go back to every place I've been, and I have great pangs of nostalgia for places I know I'm not likely to return to.I'll give a short list of my very favorite countries, all places where I love both the arts/crafts and the people: Mexico the Dominican Republic Ecuador Morocco France Italy Turkey India Thailand |

Haven't travelled much outside India - only to U.K. and Myanmar.
London is my favourite city, Shimla my all-time favourite holiday destination.

Well, apart from the drive across America with my parents, which has since been known as The Trip from Hell (or should I say IN hell),
-- where I learned that this is a truly stunning country and no, you don't see it all on TV or in the movies (and where, clearly, I also learned never to take another long road trip with the parents)--I've been to:Canada (does that count?) Japan Thailand Indonesia Hong Kong China (they were not the same when I went) Malaysia Korea Nepal India Australia New Zealand France My favs would have to be India (naturally!) and Thailand--though I was in Thailand in the late 80's, not sure I'd like it so much now with all the changes. It's always been hard to choose between the two as the fav b/c I like them for different reasons. I love the chaos and color and extremes and spirituality of India. I love the relaxed atmosphere, the people, the ease of travel, and the "warmth" of Thailand. The big surprise was China. I guess I was expecting endless blocks of soviet syle buildings, when in fact the country is still mostly rural. So, lots of green rice paddies and thatched-roof villages. It was a challenge to travel there, though, b/c of the language. Chinese is exceedingly difficult to learn and few people spoke any English, so getting a train ticket was a real trial. But on the other hand, you could rent a funky old-style black bicycle for like 5 cents a day and cycle wherever you wanted. Very nice. (Again, I was there about 15 years ago, so don't know how it is now) I'd still like to go to South America, especially Peru, and to Morocco. Where would you all like to go yet? |

I have seen quite a bit of India, and almost all United States. Have visited Singapore, Europe to some extent.
I would like to visit Peru (machu pichu), south tip of Argentina. Would also love to spend time in Italy learning their language, culture, history, architecture. |

I live in England, but have lived in US for a year and travelled around there, also returned several times to my favourite bit, the desert in Utah and Arizona. Have aslo lived in New Zealand for a year and travelled all around, favourite part being in the North of the North Island. Also visited Australia from there, the Daintree rain forest around Cape Tribulation in N.Queensland was spectacular.
Other places visited include Fiji, Hong Hong, Bali,Singapore, Egypt and most of Europe. Other favourite places as well as those already listed include Croatia (the Adriatic Highway to Dubrovnic), Slovakia and SW France (The Herault valley). India is probably current favourite, though, which is why I am returning this summer for the fourth time! |

It'll be a big decision for me to choose somewhere other than Asia, though. The three months I've spent there so far have been the best of my life. ![]() |

Dr Funkenstein... when you get to South America make sure you go to Bolivia.... an incredible range of things to do and see there, including the some of the most bizarre landscapes you will ever see on earth if you do the Salar de Uyuni trip.

As a kid, with my family we traveled all over Europe, and lived in Spain for 3 years.
Many road trips across the USA as a kid--hated them! Didn'T like the ones in Europe either---imagine travelling in a small VW van, with my parents, my elderly grandmother, my brother, my elderly aunt, and ME--stuck sitting in the back area with the luggage (that was the days before people actually thought that restraining children in seat belts was a good idea) In high school visited Japan for 6 weeks and stayed with a Japanese family. Obviously had a great impact on me since I've been now living in Japan for 25 years. Was a foreign exchange student in Greece in 1974. A difficult, but interesting experience. In college traveled in Europe for several months with friends. Loved it. As an adult, have travelled extensively all over Japan, and have dragged my kids on numerous road trips across the western and midwestern states in the USA (which they probably hated, too!) Have been to Korea 3 times. Looking forward to going to India---looking forward to start traveling now that kids are bigger. Want to go to Cambodia, Thailand, Viet Nam and other asian countries. Will possibly head to New Zealand or Australia within the next year or so. (sort of work related--but hey, who cares!!) |

OK, Rab.... but I'm going to approach it slightly different - best time had on a continent or area:
Asia.... no, not India (...gasp.... blasphemy!) ... I had the best time ever in Pakistan... see here . India is second though. South America.... Bolivia (by a nose over Ecuador and Peru) Central America.... the six weeks I spent scuba diving in Utila (Honduras), but I had a great time in Mexico too Eastern Europe.... Bulgaria is gorgeous Middle East.... I'd go back to Turkey tomorrow (but loved the Syrians too and Jordan is great for Petra and Wadi Rum and then there's the pyramids et al in Egypt... hard decision) Pacific.... of course it has to be my home country, New Zealand.... and this Friday I get to go home for a week.... yay!! Still haven't managed to get to Africa (I don't count Egypt) and in Western Europe I only managed to get to the Netherlands for a week and Paris for a week (even though I lived in London for 20 months!!) and in North America I've only spent a few days in L.A., a few more in Vancouver and one night asleep on the floor of the airport in Miami. Where next? This July I'm tossing up between Ladakh (back to India!) or Sumatra in Indonesia.... anyone been there and have advice? Or maybe China? Or Turkey? Central Asia sounds quite interesting too? Or.......? |

Wow, this is an interesting thread. Adding up all the places listed so far makes for an extensive World Tour!
As for me: Europe: Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, Poland, Germany, France, England, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Asia: Taiwan (7 years), Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, India. Africa: Morocco and Mauritius. N. America: USA and Canada (2 and a half years). Favorite places: Taipei, Taiwan - spent half of my childhood there. I have no idea how appealing it would be to a visiting tourist. Northern Norway - absolutely stunning nature. My friend insists she saw a whale. I don't believe her. Worst experiences (I won't say worst places, because travel experiences are more determined by a wide array of situational factors, i.e. who you're traveling with, what happens to you, weather, etc.): Marrakesh, Morocco: I have never been harassed anywhere on earth more than at the Djema-el-Fna -market. Strangest recollection: A man, high on something, selling belts and proceeding to beat me and my fellows with the belts after our refusal to by them. Magical atmosphere, my arse. (Met Billy Idol's make-up artist on the bus out of town.) Rome, Italy: Hectic and rather boring. Bad pizzas, in Italy! Why? Almost got run over by a scooter next to the Colosseum (and verbally harassed by the scooterdude for almost making a dent in his beloved vehicle). Got food poisoning. Saw people getting beat up outside the stadium after AS Roma-SS Lazio. And the game was no thriller, the highlight being Gazza showing a few tricks during half-time. Happy travels everyone! ![]() |

I've been to 17 sovereign nations but there are still whole regions I haven't touched including the middle east, s. america and China. Within the next few weeks the count should be up to 20 (India, Maldives & Netherlands).
Japan's a favorite, simply because it's my second home having lived there for 6 years. (Nowhere near to Diane's record, tho). It holds a lot of memories for me and it's got almost everything (culture, first world amenities, mountains, oceans, and tons of hot springs). I've never had a really bad traveling experience so I don't really have a "worst". That's why I'm nervous about this Indian trip. The closest experience I've had to India is Bangkok and it sounds like that it doesn't even compare. |

I love this thread
Ok, here I go, cronologically:
USA England France Switzerland Austria Italy Spain Brazil Germany Netherlands Belgium Mexico Chile Dominican Republic Egypt Singapore Malaysia Thailand Argentina I can choose ONE favorite something, each place has its own beauty, though this phrase is so cliche My fave city could be among London, Paris and San Francisco My fave country, as nature landscapes and towns, could be among Austria, England and Switzerland. Though I don't know enough of Argentina and Brasil, and I know they have beautiful places (actually Iguazu is wonderful, I was there last year). Mystic places.. of course Egypt, Thailand and my own Peru. Beaches.. Thailand, Brasil Amusement parks: Walt Disney World, what else! History: Italy, Egypt, There is a lot of things to mention, this a great planet |
