| In my garden alone there's Lavender, some (unhappy, neglected looking) Rosemary and Pineapple Mint, as well as blueberries, onions and garlic! ![]() The strawberry pot seems to have fallen down and broken, which is a shame. We had tons of strawberries last year. I'll have to start again now. The onions and garlic I've been fretting over while the house was empty:

| You can hear a brass band play by the sea in Pondicherry --- but they have that continental, out-of-tune, sound (French, I suppose), nothing like the smooth sound of a Brit Brass Band. |

| i learnt a lot about herbs there, using books and looking for samples as i walked along the roads and fields. i wanted to know which ones were edible for future reference. when i was in manali we stayed with the poorest family in one of the villages and they collected herbs to eat. the wild herbs there are the same as the ones that grow in europe and we used to put chickweed in with potatoes for out parathas. very nice. |

| We've had a week of frigid sub -20c temps <resulting in two burst pipes in the laundry room>. This was followed by a relative thaw - then another spectacular snowfall, ending with an icestorm early monday morning .... leaving everything coated in a luminous glaze.

| This kooky, bird brain of a Northern Cardinal has been around for almost a year now flapping up against it's own reflection in the windows, pecking at the windows & craning, hanging from all angles to peer inside. At times it has flown so hard against the window that it's cracked it's beak smearing blood all over. A few days later, healed and full of p&v, back it comes for more fun, games & window whacking. ![]() |

| oooohhh it's so scary... I'm in south western France and we're having a huge i mean hUGE storm..... It's blowing around 160km per hour where I am and up to 175 nearer the coast!!!!!!! I can see fallen trees, many tiles on the garden and there's water patches all over the house. t's still dark so I can't see the fully content of the damage, but fortunatel the local radio has said there have been no fatalities so far. The last storm we had of this volume was in 1999 and was disatrous. Fingers crossed it passes without too much damage. In any case, I was supposed to go in to work this morning but there's no way I'm taking my car anywhere! |

| Goodness Valini that sounds awful. Keep us posted and take care. I'm glad we're not as cold as you, Peak and Tacita! Here some cloud, a sort of slightly cooler change from the last few days when it has been very mild, but not cold enough for the cardigan even. Karuna - those onions and garlic have a desultory look but do have green tops. Does this mean they are thriving still??!!
