The Hindu, it is. Ever since they tied up with the Guardian, it's a bigger plus. But politically, very conservative(in writing, I mean), one does get the feeling, every article has been run through the lawyers before printing. Hence the academic tone of the news.

And thier public editor/ombudsman sucks big time. Man, that chap blows off people with ridiculous excuses sometimes.

Indian Express...hmmm...good explosive news but the printing is atrocious.

TOI, I'll end up slandering it....best left unsaid. But one thing, using it as a birdcage liner without reading MIGHT be a good idea.

Southern Newspapers

My vote goes to The Hindu as well. Carries listings for all Chennai's classical concerts for starters

What I don't like about it is it is too commercial: it runs regular "articles" that are really just advertisments for shops, exhibitions, etc.

Oh, and the other thing I don't like about it is that it wants to be The Guardian when it grows up. It is quite old enough to be grown up already and happy to have its own identity!

Not that I mind regular Guardian reprints, or the chance to do a Quick Crossword from time to time...

Second comes the Express. Don't have any birdcages, so I do read it!

Decan Chronicle: any comments DD? Big prints and lots of pictures, an easy-to-read rag: that's my impression. but it is strictly limited as I only see it occasionaly when the delivery boy makes a mistake.

Mylapore Times: Ok, now I'm getting silly (it's quite good, actually...). But not as silly as 'Apolo' something-or-other, another free local that I once saw an entire classified section rendered incomprehensible by misprints. Tamil bromine seeks bridge.... Yes, really!

A year ago I would have said I liked The Hindu best. Erudite, comprehensive, lots of local, regional and national coverage.

But now I would say the Deccan Chronicle. (And it's only Rs 1.50). Two Sudokus, two bridge columns, two crosswords, and the Chennai edition has good local coverage.

I love the Asian Age because it's re-printed (word for word) in London on the same day, so I get to read an Indian paper daily.

Oh, it happens to you too? must be a well planned thing then - my delivery boy too "by mistake" drops Deccan chronicle at least 2-3 times a month!

The first one I found on the Internet was Times of India, so that's what I read.

Questions on the list: Checking what I brought home, Panjaab kesarii is written in Devanagari, and in Hindi, not Panajbi.

On Urdu: Aren't Delhi's Qaumi awaz, Sada-e-watan and akhbar-e-mashriq large/popular enough?

Anyway, I'm printing the list and will pack it in October.

DNA ( a new kid on the block) in Bombay has been allright..

The Times toes the government line..(regardless of the govt/political party)...too stale for me.

Love Free Press Journal in Bombay...1 Rupee...

HT in Bombay has been aweful. In Delhi, its better I am told. Indian Express lost its way in the last 5 years. For some of us, for a long time, it was the alternative to the Times..being the two nationally distributed newspapers for a while.

The Hindu is good with a lot of substance but i am wary of N Ram (the editor) to be honest. I read his Frontline (a magazine) too..(a very commie/socialist tinge to it at times that its scary..)

Actually a good one, the editor/publisher is an atheist(a big plus) but old habits die hard and one struggles to admit that the paper might be better than the Hindu.

The sins of loyalty....

Wait, the Deccan Chronicle or Deccan Herald? Mine applies to the Herald.
