There was a little girl in my class called Anjali, which aparently means 'offering' or 'tribute'. She was absolutely the sweetest little thing, so I think I would have loved her name whatever it was!

russian names
Anastasia, Alexandra (short: Sandra or Sasha), Irina (Irene westernised version), Olga (surprisingly well know in the UK because of Olga Kortut), Polina ("Pauline" westernised). in fact most of the modern Russian names that are on the tip of my tongue have very closed western equivalents... Larissa is more Greek to me than Russian... the most Russian name of all is Maria but it is not exclusively russian
some old Russian names like Praskovia or Lyudmila or Lybov ("love") are not that common. my mother's name is Valentina... not so common either. |

I like names that start in A - 'Asha', 'Aarti', 'Anjali', 'Amrita'...
I knew this girl from back school who was Jain with a cute name. I can't remember the name though. Will consult with my buddies when I go there in November ![]()

A friend in India recently had a daughter she named "Khushiyan" or "Khushie" (happiness) for short. That's my current favorite.

I like the name Purnima, which means "moonlight". You can spell it Poornima, but then there might be too much teasing because it looks like "porn" to some people.

Hey Bryan! Congrats on the impending birth of a daughter. Hope all goes well.
I always liked the name Priya - which I believe means 'beloved'. I'm sure you don't need me to tell you though that you'll need to be really careful about choosing a name that doesn't leave your child open to years of abuse at school! (and the subsequent hating of her parents! )From the suggestions above, I'd say that Gayatri is just asking for school chums to shout 'GAY!' at her. Also, Khushie is, for obvious reasons I think, not a good name in English. Similarly, Poornima not only looks like 'porn' but will also result in being called Poo!! I too like the idea of choosing an Indian name for a child (if I ever have one) but I would be inclined to choose something that is not TOO Indian (if that makes any sense). Afterall, your child might not develop the same affection for India as you and may hate you for being stuck with a very Indian name. I think names like Priya and Asha are safe as they cross the divide more - and still sound funky as British names. Please let us know what the final decision turns out to be!! |
