I'm heading back in September for a month, a reasonable daily budget is probably £10 to £15 pounds per day. I'm sure you can do it for less. I never eat 3 meals a day over in india, usually one main meal and a snack around mid day. Don't know why but I just eat less.

Hallo

It is very difficult to say bcoz it depends upon you. If you avail the local bus /train (sleeper or general class) it is very cheap. The road side "Dhaba" s serve good & reasonably cheap food. For lodging the range is vast .From free( many dharamsalas offer free lodging) to five * .

If you sightsee or visit any monuments--the cost for non Indians is rather high. You might want to set aside a separate "monument fund" that is not included in your daily budget. The Taj Mahal is about US$15. But certainly not to be missed. Other places can cost around $3-5. Palaces, Forts, etc. all add up, but they are so wonderful that you shouldn't miss them for lack of budget.

I agree that £10-15 is a pretty good figure, in basic accommodations you wont be spending more that £ 4 or 5. So £10, that is about 800RS + is more than enough to get through a couple of meals, chai and juice breaks, historical site and cathing the latest SRK film. If there are two of you, usually can get by on less as the food cost goes down a bit. I also found myself eating a lot less. What can up your budget is when you are used to being 'economical' and then you have a splurge. I highly recommend a couple of splurges a week, you would be surprised, I was at the Meridien in Pune, the all you can eat brunch (that was excellent) was 390 RS - but after not sleeping the night and being dirty from the train and the 40 degree soaring temperature outside, it totally restored me.

£15 is a good budget if your staying in value hotels and taking buses and trains. You'll be able to do everything you want on that sort of money. It's work I would normally work on.
The thing about India is the fact that you can work with a wide variety of budgets. You could probably survive on a £5er a day, but I wouldn't advocate this. (I've made my feelings quite clear about people working on miniscule budgets clear in a previous post)
You could have an absolute blast on £25/30 a day. Last time I was there I had £30 a day, my two friends and I hired landcruisers to chauffeur us all around Ladakh - it was great.

The pound is also the dream currency to travel on at the moment.

Shame I earn Japanese yen really...

I have been there for a month.. travelling from the south to the north via train, took my 3 meals religiously each day, didn't do a lot of bargaining but hey I didn't buy a lot of thingsin the first place...

Travel in non-ac and sleep in budget hotel... hmm.. have come up with a total expense of US250 for the whole month

so.. it's about US$8 per day

We (Suzi and I) stayed 5 weeks and spent an average of $16 a day. We're not drinkers, though.

$20 should probably be enough.
