butterball,

an average malayali family simply CANNOT live without this calendar! this becomes the calendar ( of course ), expense tracker ( it has areas for tracking the regular expenses like milk, paper etc, event reminder ( they keep making notes to the empty spaces around the date boxes ), astrological chart ( also tells the good and bad times of the day ), important festivals/events, even as a placeholder to attach sticky notes, and even pin the odd sewing needle.

the calendar usually finds its pride of place in the kitchen where the lady of the house has the closest access.

the two leading dailies, malayala manorama and mathrubhumi compete with each other to grab the calendar market, by adding more and more "features" every year( more like a paper version of the MS outlook release ).

Things I love to buy in India:

Lots of bangles, ear-rings, & anklets, pashminas (wow! so cheap! only in India could I afford to buy Pashminas in all colours!), pretty beaded sandals, spices for making chai, bags, statues of Hindu deities (though there's a limit to how many ganesh's a girl can have in her home!), recycled paper & journals covered in sari material, and Bollywood soundtracks on CD.

vestis, tailored kurtas in fantasticly coloured silk. Saris for my friends, jewelery for some. Sandalwood ornaments for people who've watered my cat and fed my plants. Oh, and dozens of Classical CDs ---one day I'll get around to listening to them all!

I love brass so I have a lot of beautiful Indian brassware...even though I've only been once. My Indian friends always bring me something. I bought a lovely bell in Bikaneer that I look at an enjoy every day...even clang it from time to time.
The fabrics are beautiful. I'm so glad I did not end up buying that gorgeous bed cover with the mirror work in it. After all, I live in Japan and don't even have a bed, let alone a king size one that was made for. But I did buy fabrics and cloths that I just take out and look at.
I love pottery, too. The yogurt maker I picked up in Udaipur makes a great decoration piece, and when I'm in the mood, also makes yogurt.

Lets just say that the backpack is nearly empty on the flight to India, and stuffed full of everything (even a couple of clay cups from the train) on the way home!

The world of great stuff.....

along with many of the other items already mentioned....

my favorite....

Blankets, lots of them. I'm still searching for the "each side a different plaid" types I once found in Allahabad. As a result, I have to keep going back to India to look for them.

I'm also partial to Ramayana and Mahabharata comic books.

---have heard that spectacles are quite popular since they seem to be dirt cheap compared to what you can get in the west. ( get an extra pair made while you are around )

Best thing I got in India was my stonecarved chessboard.... And my pushkar 100 rs blanket...

Next time I might bring anothe lunghi or two (you got to love them) and maybe a kashmiri blanket if i find the right one... Than a cotton shirt is allways nice... might reccord some sound too... You never know... I would bring a squat toilet and a enfield if I could carry and afford it.
