Whenever i see a article or brochure on India...there is this picture of the Taj Mahal. Or, there is a picture of a tiger and a elephant.

I agree that the Taj is the most important monument / most photographed et c.....

Is there any other monument in India, that can take the place of Taj and represent India on posters and brochures and travel books ?

Which one qualifies to take the place of Taj ? Or, is there none ?

The infosys campus in Bangalore
or
The IIT kharagpur campus

These are the monuments of modern india. That we are known for, away from the tourist circle

It's not generally the same person (as far as I'm aware) but a lot of the brochures show either a guy in a Rajasthani turban, or a lady with her pallu/dupatta over her head a bit, and a bunch of tribal jewellery on.

Though it is not a monument, but the landscape of Kerala, that is blue water and coconut trees (of crs with a rope cradle) surrounding the sea can also be considered as the scene representing India.

Red face

unfortunately India is such a diverse thing that you need at least 100 things to represent it.

taj can at best represent architecture of mugul era. (or madness of a ruler who was least concerned about his people)

India gate can at best represent colonial period.

IIT or Infosys - may be changing face of india thats affecting not more that 2% of its population.
(i an sure phantom passed out from the first with a miserable CGPA and now works for infosys ) (no offence, i am doing almost the same)

turban can only represent rajasthan.

let me see what all i can list

tajmahal, indiagate, old man in turban, tiger, peecock, over loaded trucks, broken roads, goa, hill train of darziling, benaras, hampi, pan and pan masala stains on not so clean walls. Marine drive in mumbai, gateway of india. tanjavur, elephants, cows on the road, butter chicken, buddha, .... keep on adding

To represent India through a single monument is very difficult , the monument should be unique/typical ie not a common structure which can not be identified separately. Taj qualifies all these. Beside Taj there are few monuments too like Hawa Mahal ( Jaipur) ,The Wheel of Konark Temple , Meenakshi Temple (Madurai) , Gommateswara (Sravonabelegola) etc.
Though Gateway Of India (Mumbai ) , India Gate (N.Delhi) , Charminar (Hyderabad ) , Howrah Bridge (Kolkata ) , Golden Temple (Amritsar) , are there but they are not that unique/special to reprsent India globaly according to me .This is entirely my thinking, no offence please.

Well.. not exactly.. .. but the point of choosing them was not, how much of population they represent or touch. It is of how much %age of people outside india recognize them. Now if you go to US and say IT, they will assume that you are from Bangalore That's the effect these institutes are having. And that gives them the headway in becoming the leading light of india
