What is the story behind the name "India Mike" ?

Hi
I have been a member of IM for sometime now and have wondered behind the naming of this travel forum as "Indiamike".

Is there any moderator who can provide us a story behind this nomenclature?

Regards
Sayak

You can read about the history of IndiaMike here:

aarosh/TYD

I read the links that you posted. Who is Arjun? Nadreg doesn't seem to get a mention.
The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.

Arjun exists in earth universe, in a parallel universe of IM, Arjun exists as Nadreg.
What he does in rest of the universes is not yet known.

Once upon a time.... long long time ago, there was a cool guy - Arjun The problem with mythologies, just like recovered memories, everyone's recollection is different. Some faulty, some distorted.

The problem with windoze folks is that they have too many DLLs. When in doubt check nadreg But our nadreg is a very powerful DLL.

He is the Apple of our eye!

Well, Mike started it all, with a small site about his and his friends' travels. The name seemed silly when the site grew to thousands of members, but it stuck anyway.

There's been good times, and bad times, and, especially considering Mike wasn't so interested in India any longer, there came a last-straw time for him and he hit the big red switch.

Arjun/Nadreg came to the rescue, and things seem to have been going on nicely ever since

There have been times when I've looked for that red switch myself.

It's always darkest before it goes completely black.

This was a totally spontaneous question which lingered in my mind for sometime - since "india mike" - as a name for a India travel website sounds really out of place :-)

But yes, its best we stick to it, else , if the name was something different I wouldnt have wondered about its history

That is interesting! Why does the name IndiaMike sound out of place to you, Sayak? For me, "Mike" is short for "microphone" and it is nothing short of marvellous as the name of this site.

A frequent mistake. Mic (pronounced Mike) is short for microphone: Mike (pronounced mic) is short for Michael only.

Thats true - its the short of "India Microphone".
But a domain of the sort of "travelindia.com" or "indiarides.com" sounds more relevant.
Btw, this is an opinion only. :-)

The Indiamike brand is very well established. Whether it makes sense or not, I think we are stuck with it. I think that Nadreg is pretty well sussed on the necessary bottom-line business aspects of running a website and I cannot imagine him throwing that asset away.

There is a company called NCR. It stands for National Cash Registers. It has rather faded, now, but it had been a known brand (once almost as well known as IBM) for decades. One day, its directors decided that it was a stupid name for a company that hadn't actually made a cash register in ages, so they changed it. Overnight, it went from being a company every one had heard of, to being one that nobody had ever heard of. They changed it back again. Goodness knows what it cost --- even apart from the branding/rebranding excercise, it can't be good for a company to look stupid, although, I suppose that this was around the time when blatantly stupid actions were becoming a part of MNC management technique. A practice that has now become routine .
