If you’re in a foreign country, it’s not always usual to shake somebody’s hand or to give 3 kisses on the cheeks.

In India is it this way or not ? :

Indians greet with the Namaste, formed by pressing the palms together with fingers up below the chin and nodding the head. To show respect, a slight bow is added. When meeting foreigners, Indian men shake hands, but do not generally touch women, out of respect for privacy. Indian women may offer their hands as a courtesy. When meeting a woman, a man should wait for her to initiate a handshake. In a group, greet the eldest person first.

How is it done in your country ?

Hi

In North India - you can say 'Namaskar' - join ur hands together - like you are praying. Bow a bit. here is no need to nod / wiggle / wobble the head while doing Namaskar.

In south India - you can say "Namaskaram". Join ur hands and bow a bit. That wil do.

In Brazil, males greet each other with a handshake, and if theres friendship, we give a pat on the pack at the same time, or partake in an intricate series of handshakes.
Males greeting females and females meeting females, we join cheeks two times and kiss the air. Even with unknown people that youre meeting for the first time. Many people (foreigners especially) make the mistake of actually kissing the cheek twice, which will definately be taken as awkward if theres no intimacy. Male and female friendship greeting usually consist a kiss on the cheek followed by a hug.
Now, we Brazilians are incredibly touchy feely people, to a point where you get scared of meeting too many people for having to say hello to each one of them.
In that case, I do the community hello (open your palm and wax on wax off in a semi circle movement and say hi everyone).

Unless you are dealing with religious people, elders, senior musicians, etc you can get by here in Chennai without ever giving or receiving a namascaram. Having learnt my "Hindu manners" (and it is a Hindu greeting) among musicians in London, quickly discovered that it was mostly not needed in Chennai.

This English "How do you do?" is an odity, as that combination of words is only used in a formal handshake situation.
