What is India in your mind?
What did u think of when you thought of India?
India is vast space: space to accommodate clamour of giant cities, teaming with the energy of millions and the silence of empty solitudes. India is a space: space to include the pilgrim and the politician, the poet and the revolutionary, the street urchin and the merchant prince, ahimsa (non violence) and nuclear might, three thousand years and the twenty first century. India is the express high way thundering with traffic and slip road beside it with the sign ‘for camels , elephants and bullock carts ‘.India is mega dams and factories , call centers and shopping malls , and the voices raised in protest against all these and more… . India is a color T.V, garlanded with marigolds and a picture of marigold on top, playing MTV while grandmother counts the beads of her mala and grand children dream of US green cards. India is the face less anonymity of cities where neighbors don’t know the names of neighbors and it is the ‘ram ram ' of time less greetings exchanged by strangers who pass each other on a lonely path. India is the smell of incense and ancient stone, of parched earth when the first drops of rain fall. Of the dust and sweat of rattle trap busses, of the sweet, milky tea, served in an earthen bowl by a ‘chai walla’ on the whistle stop railway stations of night. India is the crowded bazaar where two dozen languages and half a dozen faith negotiate the day to day transactions of buying and selling , haggling and cheating , and quarreling , and , above all , always above all , living together . keep adding more of India... ![]() |

India is the country of timeless, boundary-less love story of Radha Krishna, where the morality brigade is always on the lookout.

its great to be able to romanticise india - as long as you're not the farmer who is committing suicide, as long as you're not the 7 year old girl who is not getting raped in the slums, as long as it is not your house that is getting washed away in the rains, as long as you're not the one who is getting bashed up for not belonging to a particular community ... etc etc etc etc etc etc
the woods look lovely dark and deep - but india has miles to go - yet. and nay - i'm not turning this into a political discussion - i get unnerved by the 'trivial' visualisation of india, as She is today. :brishti Quote:

India is where I might have been born if my ancestors had turned south rather than west 3,000 or so years ago.
