this is the link:
http://almoraboy.blogspot.com/2008/01/ajc-part-1.html i had also put this in from kumaon ka itihaas. some more stuff was also written on the same subject in the book. the name, it said, came from the long grass (almodiyaa) that grew in this area. am not sure, but will try to get another look into the same. also, some elder relatives are coming over for lunch on the weekend.. so just drop me a reminder and i will surely ask them ![]() ![]() |

Almora - The name of the sociocultural region of Kumaun is believed to have been derived from "Kurmanchal", meaning Land of the Kurmavtar (the tortoise incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Preserver of Hindu Trinity).
Does the above help ? |

Thank you very much for your replies.
It looks like the most consistent translation for the name has to do with the type of grass/plant which grows abundantly in the region - Rumex hastatus. It does have a pretty flower to it. I have since passed on all this information to my friend, who's name is Almora. She has been most grateful, so thanks again to everyone who has contributed to this!! Of course I will still be interested in finding out any more information about the name, if it arises. Doron |

According to my Hindi teacher, a pahari girl from Almora the common name of the flower is Chalma, she says the locals usually just refer to it as Alma. KK
