What do you do when you’ve time to kill in the journey?

You are waiting for your flight/train/bus…
Or for that matter when you are in air/or in the train/ or in the bus for a long time..
What do you do…?

Read
Listen to music
Stare outside the window
Chat up the local crowd
Play atakshari, dumb charades, cards…
Sleep
Try out the various local snacks.
Get down at every station..jlt...
Be a nuisance
Do you share your toothpaste with the other travelers…?
Do you keep in touch after the journey ?
Do you share your book/magazine with the fellow traveler?

Add: "scribble in my travel journal".

Read: Yes.
Listen to music: No, I can't be bothered to carry a player - I'd probably lose it anyway. India with its noise and voices is music enough?
Stare outside the window: Yes. I love to watch the world go by.
Chat up the local crowd: I wonder if a respectable young woman in India chats up locals...? Sometimes?
Play atakshari, dumb charades, cards… Naah, but good idea.
Sleep: If I'm really tired.
Try out the various local snacks: If I'm hungry.
Get down at every station..jlt...: Probably not - for fear of missing the train, bus...
Be a nuisance: I hope not.
Do you share your toothpaste with the other travelers…? Never been asked to share.
Do you keep in touch after the journey? With some, yes.
Do you share your book/magazine with the fellow traveler? Why not.

While in trains:

Read, Read, Read, eat, sleep, eat, Read, Read, eat, sleep......

this is how it goes to me when i am traveling alone...

ok. a bit of watching the scenery every now and then to relax the eyes.

The worst part is when you forget to stuff enough books/mags to last the journey.

i am not majorly into chatting up with people while traveling, but do once in a while when the company is right.

another pastime is to get down at (most) stations and do a bit of windowshopping(!)

While on a flight:
not very different - except for the last point..

keeping in touch after the journey? rarely, but there are cases
be a nuisance? perhaps the only clash i end up having is about the lights past bedtime. but i give in too easily.

We were on our train in Kolkata waiting at the station to leave for Bodghaya at about 9pm.It was fairly hectic and we spent half an hour watching a family of rats playing on the tracks. We were travelling with our children and to entertain Eliza [our 5 yr old]I made up a story about Rupert and Raviola Ratatunga. We often talk about them and wonder how they are going.I don't think I will make it to the famous children's author stage just yet,but I must admit it is one of my favourite memories.

The nuisance piece reminded me about a Namboodiri joke ( Kerala brahmins - a rich source of jokes like sardarjis in north india )

During the early days of rail travel in kerala - Namboodiri is making his first train journey. He had only heard about the train with the huge black engine that spews out smoke and makes a hell of a racket. He is impressed. He gets a window seat, and starts enjoying the view. After sometime, he prepares a nice paan and starts chewing. The train is pulling into Shoranur station, when namboodiri spits out the paan through the window. He doesnt realise that the Window glass is down, and he ends up splattering the paan all over his co-passenger. He gets a resounding slap on his face.

Journey over, a friend asks the namboodiri about his experience. His reply: " terrific! simply amazing! but watch out for the slap at Shoranur... "
