What caste am I in?

I am a US citizen by birth (with Indian ethnicity). I am relocating to Mumbai to live permanently. I have an OCI – overseas citizen of India visa on my US Passport.

I hear that the caste system in India is still influential.
-How can one tell what caste someone is in?
-Are people from different castes forbidden from marrying each other?
-And how will I know what caste I am in?

When it comes to marriage, reservations in government jobs, it is. It is also less influential in the metros than in the hinterland.
If you've lived here for a while, by the last name and state of origin is usually a good bet. e.g. Verma in punjab are high caste. Vermas in parts of UP are a part of the scheduled castes.

If their parents are orthodox, if they are from a conservative village, ie. if they cant make their own decisions, yes that would be a hurdle.

You could post your last name and the state of origin of your parents (as they migrated from India) here and people can help you figure it out. OR you could reach here and ask someone. You can also google using your surname

I'm the OP. When my parents lived in the India, I know they both came from upper middle class families. Probably not the higher castes but not the untouchable/leper castes either.

I am permanantly relocating from the USA to live in India. My life priorities are marriage and children and family. I imagine there is a lot more pressure from relatives to marry someone from a certain caste. However, I will have NO RELATIVES in India to force me to follow "tradition."

What might happen if: I meet a really terrific Indian woman in Mumbai from a very low caste...She might even be living in the poorest parts of Mumbai...Yet, we like each other. Is she (as a lower caste) forbidden to marry a higher caste member, or is that okay to marry 'up' in society? ALSO, what consequences will befall me (or my future children) for marrying below my caste?
