| Western Union - in the other direction Ok, here's a slightly unusual question: we all know many indians are sending money back to india to their families. but in this case a european friend of mine spent a lot of time in punjab and left some money (i think about 1500USD) with his punjabi friend. supposedly this "friend" said that it's not possible to send money from india to europe via western union thingie. that sounded very strange, so i was wondering if anyone here knows if there is really some problem with an indian national sending this amount of money to a foreign (eu) country and if so, if there is any way to bypass this, so my friend can get his money (he's living off social security, which here means about 200USD a month)... i think the money is given in local currency and then calculated how much it is in a foreign currency... i have a feeling he's been duped, although he knew the guy for quite some time and usually indians that you know well won't cheat you... thanks amigos zenkris |

| Western Union can ONLY be used to receive money in India. It cannot be used to send money FROM India.

| your friend left already? i didn't understand why he left the money in india? if he brought so much in legally, he should not have problems taking it back, if it was declared on arrival. if he just brought it in his pocket - why not take it out the same way? foreigners are not frisked at the airport, as far as my experience goes. if he's coming back - especially for a long time - why not open the savings account with private bank like ICICI (I did!) and automatically recieve the ATM Card, that can be used anywhere in the world to withdraw the funds, or " icici travel card", that even gives you air tickets and such at a discount! |

| I would have thought that a 'luxury' holiday tourist would have that much in each pocket! Certainly not enough to worry about bringing in or taking out. But he is there, it is here. Tough. Time for his next India trip......... Or get his friend to convert it to dollars, in as large denomination as possible, and send him a couple of books by courier with the notes enclosed? |

| thanks for replies. my friend was living for a long time as a monk in a hare krishna -like ashram, maybe more than a year and being quite ignorant about handling money, he took cash with him and had it kept with a brahmin friend... not sure, though, why he didn't get it back from him when he left, as he told me the whole story a year ago and only now asked to enquire about western union m.t. i think the guy at that time had some excuse to give money later or the like (i have a feeling he's a crook)... if anyone else thinks of any good idea of how to send the money, they're welcome... thanx zenkris |

Some of us are stupid, or extravagant, or just careless with the stuff, but 'ignorance' I don't buy. If this guy really is a friend you know well, then consider this wthdrawn before it is even said .....but I wonder if he is about to ask you for a loan? Cynical? Moi? | |

| Eeny meeny mango | Moneygram Try Moneygram, not WU. I believe it can be sent anywhere, any way for a flat fee - unlike WU which charges a hefty percentage. There are agents all over India. http://www.moneygram.com
