There is a voting going on to select the new 7 wonders of the world. Those who liked Taj please vote for it
From India Meenaxi Temple from Madurai too is in for the contest. Though I’m from south I campaign for the Taj Mahal. Press Trust of India AGRA, Dec. 1. — Film star and former Miss Universe Aishwarya Rai today released a hot air balloon near the Taj Mahal, launching a campaign to rope in votes worldwide for including the 17th century monument of love in a list of new seven wonders of the world. “Taj is a beautiful piece of architecture, more beautiful than me. I’ve always regarded it with admiration as it embodies love,” said Rai, a student of architecture, clad in a red saree and looking ravishing as she let go the huge blue balloon marked “N 7 W” (New Seven Wonders) 100 feet up in the air near the Taj. As a selected group of guests clapped and cheered, Rai, who has acted with equal aplomb in mainstream as well as parallel cinema, walked about half a km to signal the nomination of the monument for a new list of seven wonders of the world. The balloon, tied to the ground with huge ropes, will remain aloft for three months as part of efforts to mobilise support for the Taj to be reckoned among the new seven wonders of the world. Rai asked the people to send SMS messages to the “New Seven Wonders Foundation”, which is conducting a global voting through Internet for the selection of the new seven wonders of the world, to help galvanise support for the Taj so that it could make it to the final list of the seven wonders. Earlier, the Bollywood hearthrob, with a milling crowd around her, spent some 30 minutes going round the Taj accompanied by Mr Bernard Weber of “New Seven Wonders Foundation”, the man who has conceived the idea of the new seven wonders of the world. Please vote for Taj ! Vote por favor para Taj ! S'il vous plaît voter pour Taj ! Bitte wählen Sie für Taj ! Per favore di votare per Taj ! Stemt u alstublieft voor Taj ! Пожалуйста голосует за Taj ! Behag stemmer for Taj ! Last edited by machadinha : Jun 22nd, 2007 at 05:19. Reason: merged threads |

It's hardly new though, I remember seeing this website almost 2 years ago. Anyway, this round of voting is just to create the shortlist of 21. The Taj is firmly in the top 10 already. Look at the statistics page, over 50% of people voting are from Mainland China. Scary. |

When I voted, all those months ago, you didn't have to ring some international phone number to make it count either.

Pfft, I'm not paying to vote for anything!
And what's with the Statue of Liberty? the Sydney Opera House? the Petronas Towers? etc ? Sure they're nice icons but hardly worthy of inclusion against most of the other contenders which are truly wondrous IMHO.

I have a bone to pick with the New7wonders site.
There is no such thing as "St Petersburg Cathedral". ![]()

it's not an SMS number, its an international phone number, ie (+67 something something).
Personally I agree with Timmy, somehow it is sacrilege that the Sydney Opera House is considered more of a "wonder" than Petra. |

+675 is Papua New Guinea.
They must have a deal with the telco there that allows them to make money from calls to it, like those international phone sex numbers (NB I know this because I used to work in the industry. The telco industry, that is, not phone sex!) This would also explain why the voting is open for such a long time (i.e. another 12 months). Lots of money to be made. Wish I had thought of it. |

I was also wondering about this. As a general rule beware of international or premium rate numbers.
There is a scam operative in the UK at the moment. Apparently someone phones you up (usually a recorded message) to tell you that you have won some money and to claim it you have to ring up a number. This is on a premium line and they then keep you hanging on for ages while you run up a massive phone bill. Needless to say no money is forthcoming. I'm shocked that the telephone companies allow this to happen or in some cases are a party to it. There must be some intention with the new 7 wonders poll to make some money. Reading the website, it says that half the money raised by the whole project will be used to rebuild the Bamian Buddhas but neither UNESCO or the Afghan goverment are actually involved or approve of this. Has anyone on the forum actually voted in this poll and how much did it cost you? Last edited by Alan D : Dec 2nd, 2004 at 20:01. |

Like I said, when I voted a long time ago, you didn't have to ring or sms or anything.
In fact, now I think of it, I think there was a thread about it on the LPTT a while ago (but is probably gone now) and everyone posted there 7. |

Why is the leaning tower of Pisa among the nominees/winners? becuase it was not built on solid ground ?
This must be part of the telephone scam where (although its not a 1-900 number,) you are charged a ridiculous amount if you call it. |
