very very sad indeed
i have always thought when most of the prostitutes come to the profession out of need and not choice then why are they looked down upon?

2 days back there was an article in times of india.
more girl kids get aborted, more girl kids are pulled out of school than boys, more girl children are malnourished than male children.Facts speak for themselves.
The moral dilemma in selling a child so the others can eat a bit longer.
just for the record 77% of indian live below half a dollar per day out of which some 23% live below 5 repeat 5 cents a day.
I would not like to add any more.

A slight correction.I am not sure of the 23%>it could be a few points here or there and just a few maybe 3/5 cents here or there.

It's shocking if it's true.

Although prostitution is everywhere & it's the most ancient proffession but still, something which is wrong is always wrong.
I've just mailed a letter & a copy of this report to DG Rajasthan Police & one copy to women commision.
Don't worry, we'll not let India become South East Asia.

Arguably, there may be places where it is already the case, but if by 'becoming like South-East Asia', you mean being on the standard sex-trade route for world travellers, especially those with a perverted interest in youngsters, then no, I don't think anyone can disagree with you: we do not want that to happen. But this is not some sex-for-tourists thing going on here, it is prostitution by Indian women for Indian customers, and far from being new, is well established.

What is so strange, to me too, is that here is a community that practices this by tradition. That is just weird.

Should it be stopped? If that were possible; it probably isn't.

I don't even begin to understand this one.

Tradition is a word that covers many sins. Child marriage is traditional, yet it is illegal, and occasional (perhaps token) efforts are made to prevent it. That something is traditional does not make it right.

I have no moral objection to prostitution. I have every objection to forced prostitution.

Its a fine line isn't it between force and need? You may choose something because the other option is starvation or a brutal marriage or enforced slave labour as an unmarried daughter or a daughter in law... but isn't that also force in a way? Then the real moralists would say better to be beaten by a violent husband on whom you are dependant for instance than be a prostitute and support yourself and your children

Then there are the stories of all the models and the bollywood actresses who do it....they have neither starvation nor anyone forcing them...its just greed...

Nick, I never said its for travellers, I just said it's wrong. Plz don't assume that I always say things to target somebody.
Have a nice time.

There are many communities in India which by tradition are involved in Prostitution,Theft,Dacoity etc..It's wrong I know this,it's a problem & will be taken care of soon.

And when I said Ancient Proffession, thats not in Indian context but in world context.

I think what Nick was referring to was the South East Asia reference in your post - Sadly, Vietnam ,Thailand and Cambodia have become 'hunting grounds' for western pedophiles and it is referred to as 'sex tourism' by the authorities and people trying to stop it. As pointed out, quite different to what the thread was talking about initially....although you do hear the odd story I guess, its nothing like SE Asia.

Exactly. That is what makes the difference.

With very few possible exceptions, India is not a place where a foreign man walking down the road is going to be casually offered young flesh at a price. I gather (I admit to not having been there) that there are plenty of SE Asian countries where this is common, and of course, those shopping for flesh are attracted there.

Maybe we are talking at cross purposes, and I am misunderstanding. Do you mean to say it is any less old in India than in the rest of the world?

Because, if you do, I suggest that you ask some lorry drivers!

Or ask their wives, who are now suffering from AIDS as a result of their husbands' un-protected sex with prostitutes.

India has a huge problem with AIDS, but it receives very little publicity, and there is still a lot of denial.

Not quite so much as a few years ago, when it was all blamed on foreigners, and those resident here had to take a test and show a certificate that they were not HIV-positive.

Prostitution is as ancient in India as anywhere in the world.

"free will" at the age of 12/13?????!!! what about peer pressure, dependency, indoctrination, etc??? This is sickening!

And the inverted comas around the "victim" make me wonder. There are a lot of sick men out there, anywhere.

When I said world context, that includes India also.I know few people who are from transport industry & are suffering from AIDS.
Few states,so far, have been successful in fighting the menace of aids,e.g,Tamilnadu, where %wise its on decline.
There is one more problem that is not that well known & ,i.e, exploitation of Helpers by lorry drivers. These young guys are exploited by their lorry drivers to gratify their unnatural lust & they are more prone to H.I.V inffection.

According to me people from transport industry specifically speaking the lorry drivers and helper are very much prone to HIV+ as to satisfy their lust they can go to any extent that too without any preventive measures. For them virgin or no virgin, under-age or over-age nothing matters. It's sad but true..

It is matter of supply and demand. as long as there is a demand, there will be a supply. After all, it is the world's oldest profession.
