Interesting development in that Texas polygamists' angle that was brought up on this thread: Texas had no right to seize sect children, appellate court says (LA Times article, but the story of course is all over various news sources.)

I've been following that story, another unhealthy situation where people are socially manipulated into situations that leave vulnerable people without the power to decide what is their own best interest. Afraid the State of Texas has been so ham handed in its approach it may have lost an opportunity to do something that is significantly helpful.

I'm wondering if there are going to be multiple lawsuits now against the state of Texas. I predicted that this was going to happen the day they took the children... what concrete evidence did they have? None, unless they had more than what they're letting on. Now, what are they going to do about the children that HAVE been abused? Where is the line drawn between Freedom of Religion and what is abuse/neglect...whatever, and who decides that?

There have been similar things here - people escape or leave these sects and then spend years trying to get people to believe what happens, then more people speak up and finally they authorities act and it usually goes pear-shaped. People here are trying to get an investigation happening for all sorts of reasons, including child endangerment, into a sect called the Exclusive Brethren. They wield an enormous amount of power for their size - contributing to conservative political parties here and in NZ, distributing right wing political material, and ruthlessly excluding and cutting off anyone who leaves and constraining the members. They pay no tax as they are a religion, and receive public funding for their schools and other activities....
The power and politics within and around these cults and sects goes very deep, and when you hear the fear in people's voices when they speak of their experience, and the trauma at being cut off from their families.. it is really upsetting. |
