Useful Hindi Words For Travellers

Travelling around I found out that there are certain words that can help you to get rid of insistant boring people who are just interested in selling things to you (hotels, carpets, information...) in which you are not interested at all. Also some specific expressions to ask for a discount, etc.

Does anybody know some of this words in hindi?

E.g.
leave me alone
go away
any discount?/give me a better price
etc.

Yes, of course, also these. Although, what I was asking for was sentences you don't find in dictionaries, but in the street.

For formal nice expressions I found a good site:

http://www.escapetoindia.com/general...i_language.htm

from this site I share the following extract with you:

Below we are giving a list of few common phrases together with their Hindi equivalents. Though Hindi is spoken by largest number of Indians, it may not be understood in South India.

English Hindi
Good Morning Shubh prabhat
Good night Shubh ratri
Hello / goodbye Namaste
Excuse me Maaf kijiyeh
Please Meharbani se
Yes / no Haan / nahin
Big Bada
Small Chotta
Today Aaj
Day Din
Night Raat
Week Haftah
Month Mahina
Year Saal
Medicine Davai
Ice Baraf
Egg Anda
Fruit Phal
Vegetables Sabzi
Sugar Chini
Butter Makkhan
Rice Chaaval
Water Paani
Tea Chai
Milk Dudh
Do you understand English? Kya aap angrezi samajhte hain?
I do not understand. Meri nahi samajhta.
Where is a hotel? Hotel kahan hain?
How far is (name the place)? (Name the place) kitni door hain?
How do I get to (name the place) ? (Name the place) ko jane ke liyeh
kaiseh jaana parega?
How much? Kitne paise?
This is expensive. Yeh bahut mehanga hai.
Show me the Menu. Mujheh minu dikhaiyeh.
The bill please. Bill de dijiyeh.
What is your name? Appka shubh naam kya hai?
What is the time? Kitneh bajeh hain?
How are you? Aap kaiseh hain?
Very well, thank you. Bahut accha, shukriya.

For discount..just say 'Discount'...its very much a part of the Hinglish Indian vocabulary..(the spelling just flew outta my head..)

Like..Phonetically you could say..."Mooo_jay achhaaaa Discount Dhee_g_yea". This means "Give me a good discount" .

Moojay (as in j walking) = Me, myself
Achhaaa (chh as in cha cha cha)= good
Dheejeeyea= give

good luck

that's my point, isabel, your table (sorry) does not have the two expressions that I was asking. not every phrase book will teach you how to make compliments.

that's nice and how kind of you are the every day part of the English vocabularly... what are their equivalents in Hindi? i just want to be able to be nice to people who don't speak English - usually the ones outside the tourist line. like women on the market selling NICE hand-made pictures... women on the street inviting me to their houses...

Thats nice (referring to some object) = yeh bahut acchhaa hai / yeh bahut badheeyaa hai

Its very kind of you people = aap bhaley log hain / aap khaandaan log hain /

Its very kind of you (single person) = aap bahut acchhe hain / aap bahut bhaley hain (this is not a commonly used language form)

Maine toh bill hee nahi banaayaa hai !

(i've not made the bill)(i've not billed you) so where's the question of a discount ?

Haan Haan, woh trekking waallaah thread mein aapke naam bill faad diya hain.

(Yes, yes, that trekking waallaah thread i have billed on your name)

(this is a turn of phrase.... which means i have conveniently blamed you for the goof-up on the trekking thread)

ha! just noticed something: medicine is "davai" in hindi
davai means "give me" (or "let's") in Russian.

so, "give me medicine", Russian+Hindi: davai davai.

ohh where is my Get Back to Work music?????

Here is a great online site for learning hindi
http://www.ncsu.edu/project/hindi_lessons/lessons.html

It is good to learn how to use the verb 'to want'
Lesson # 2

Hindi is a great but tough language to learn..

Mai khana chata hoon - I want to eat
Mai wapas hotel jana chata hoon - I want to go back to the hotel
Mujay pani chaheeyay - I want water

You're right volga_volga, I didn't realise these words weren't there either. If you use these kind of things in hindi people are really happy to know that somobody tries.
