i attended some screenings last year--great annual event

just heard about a new film venue:
Imaginasian Theater - Vanaja, which is now showing only at village cinemas, will open there next weekend
the link doesn't seem to be working, but the theater is on E. 59th street

at the MET:
Special Exhibition
Reinstallation of the South Asia Galleries
Gandhara, Mathura, Andhra and Gupta Sculpture

Opened August 10, 2007
Florence and Herbert Irving Galleries for the Arts of South and Southeast Asia, 2nd floor
These galleries explore the South Asian emergence of Buddhist and Hindu sculptural traditions between the 2nd century B.C. and the 8th century A.D. More than 160 works from the permanent collections are juxtaposed to trace the range of stylistic and iconographic developments in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India during a period that witnessed great ideological ferment and international exchange. The recently published volume The Art of Gandhara in The Metropolitan Museum of Art addresses much of this early production.

thanks for posting about the newark exhibit! i hadn't included it because new yorkers tend to be loathe to acknowledge that life, much less culturally rich life, exists beyond the city.

but it actually looks pretty easy to get to and appears to be well worth the trek, and then some:

* Train
From Penn Station - The Newark Light Rail connects Broad Street Station to Penn Station. Take the Light Rail to the Washington Park stop on Broad Street. The Museum is located across the Park on Washington Street. The Light Rail operates every 10 minutes during rush hour, every 15 minutes during non-peak hours and every 30 minutes on weekends and major holidays.

* Bus
NJ Transit buses go to Newark Penn Station.
From Newark Penn Station- Transit Bus #'s 11, 28, 29, 44 & 72.
From Broad St. Station - #13 or #27 to Broad St./Washington Pl. (Walk 2 blocks along park to Museum).

The Rubin Museum of Art has always got a pertinent exhibit to South Asia and/or the Himalya either happening or "on deck". Unfortunately (for some reason) the RMANYC.ORG site always crashes my computer upon entry, so can't confirm their latest exhibits and schedule.

i'm jokingly ethnocentrist, of course, but if it's outside of manhattan it is, by definition, a trek!

another event:

diwali, at the south street seaport, sunday, october 14, from noon 'til 8 pm, when there will be fireworks.

mention here, with a few additional links.

and here's a good summary and some photos of the event a few years back.
