Two quick quick questions.....

1/ It's been 10yrs since I've been to India. We're flying into Delhi, going around Rajasthan, down to either Kerala or Goa, and then flying out of Bombay.

I'm counting on spending £25 or $40 a day for both me and my girlfriend - is this realistic or optimistic?

2/ 10yrs ago I was advised to take US$ and to split my money into half cash and half travellers cheques. Is this still the case or has the Euro changed things. Or indeed has UK£ made a comeback - what's the score?

Well considering what happened to that woman in South America - I think I'll give that particular option a miss.

I second Jyotirmoy's advice. South America is a totally different kettle of fish.

Aye but how accessible are cash machines once you get out of major cities though? I mean I wouldn't take out cash in Varanasi regardless anyway. But what about Agra or Jaipur for example - are there cash machines there?

Cash Machines are all over the place these days since the State Bank Of India joined the cirrus network. (Cirrus is a world wide network that many many banks subscribe to, even your Bank card from home might be linked to this)
Even smaller places have ATM these days!!

Still IMHO travellers cheques are still the easiest to cash in most destinations as the change places are spread all over India and more apparent than ATM.

Still with a bit of nosing around you'll usually track down an ATM in the vicinity even if you need to get on a bus to go find it!!

If you decide to go with a Credit/debit card, take a back up stash of TCs you'll be glad you did at some point!!

Some Pound notes for an initial change at the airport plus a few more as standby for later on your trip & an ATM card, You'll find machines everywhere these days,,,,,,,,,,

Okay cheers for the answers so far. What about spending £25 or $40 a day for both me and my girlfriend? Realistic or optimistic for April 12 - April 30?

Some days you'll spend less than that, some days more,,,,,,, but you'll be fine for meals, budget guesthouses/hotels train/bus travel & a few treats along the way, Of course budgets are made to be broken,,,,, don't think you mention how long you're going for!, though whatever, Halfway through you can always re-budget whatever you've got left, then half way through that rebudget again & again if you have to, it's surprising how very little you can get by on if you really have to, Have a great trip ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Guy Lafleur and his wife got mugged in Buenos Aires in February. Was that it?
How dare they do that to a Canadian Sports Icon.

Wait till I get down there again and straighten our South American cousins out!

Unhappy

noooo!!! and it was in Buenos Aires... transliterating a phrase we say here "what a bad milk" (it means something like 'what a bad luck')

but don't be afraid of buenos aires! it's a funny and beautiful city. The tip here (and like in every tourist city in the world) is: don't look like a tourist. That means don't walk with your DSLR camera with a huge lens and a video camera hanging from your neck and a gold rolex watch....

buenos aires at night..
