Trekking in India vs. Nepal, and safety of Nepal?
Howdy,
Has anyone done any trekking in India? Any recommendations? And how does it compare to Nepal (Annapurna, etc)? Further, what are the seasons? Is March and early April too cold still?
We're hoping to be up in the Dharamsala and Rishikesh area in February and March; originally we were planning on going to Nepal for March and early April, but are unsure of the safety. I've heard some bad stories, but not sure if it is just "Western fear" or no longer an issue. The same goes for Kashmir, although a Kashmiri jeweler down here in Kovalam said it is fine, but am not sure if I should take that at face value.
Thanks!

!! Dont trust him! The number of times i have heard "dont belive people who may try to tell you Kashmir is safe"
We are going to Nepal and (hopefully) dharamsala but not trekking, so I think we are probably avoiding most of the risks - except the busses of course, which is probably more likely to kill you than a militant.
Still, i think all the news i have read about the murders and ransoms - it would probably nag at me if i went trekking, esp since my girlfriend doesn't like trekking or militants... just depends whow brave you are i guess!
Problems seem to be far less in india and mainly involving lone trekkers in the kullu valley.. the nepalese maoists/military look very volatile at the moment, in my humble opinion.
