Depends what kind of travel insurance you want - all risks, or just the essential. I chose the latter, and have always used http://www.columbusdirect.com/ in the past, though lately, I have been hearing good reports from and about http://www.worldnomads.com/

Steve - I am currently with Norwich Union for a couple annual worldwide. But over the last few years I have used different companies as most of them offer a fairly standard product range and it generally boils down to cost. The quickest and best way to research the pricings are the comparison websites like -

* http://www.insuresupermarket.com
* http://www.confused.com

It might also be worth checking your home contents policy (if you have one) to check if it covers your belongings away from home. Mine does so when I take travel insurance I skip that part and take the bare minimum which is the medical bits.

Hope that helps
