Lightbulb Tourism research on India

Tourism research on India
Hi I have just completed a BA Tourism in which I spent a lot of time in Kovalam researching socio-cultural impacts of tourism from a host perspective, sex tourism, sustainable tourism etc.
I am continuing with an MA and am trying to plan a topic for my next dissertation concerned with India.
I am looking for willing tourists/travellers to India who will help me with my research once I decide and either allow me to interview them or complete a questionnaire for me.
Hope to be back in Kerala in august and september for further primary research and would love to hear from anyone with any ideas.
Cheers

Tracey

Hello Tracey and welcome to indiamike.com

If you are in London I would be happy to chat with you, if not I will complete a questionnaire for you.

Could you post some details of your findings from your research in Kovalam?

I had 10 days in Kovalam in Feb 2001 and enjoyed my time there, though the place does make you wonder about the effect tourism has had on the locals.

As I am taking some data from IM (with due credit) on Goa, I thought I would share it with the community as usual. If I quote anyone verbatim I will surely ask for their permission before hand. We are three people working on the paper (my colleague Anil Yadav and one of our students, Viral Patel) and we contrast the image of Goa as found on news articles, travel agent websites and user generated content, you get the drift.

I would be happy to share my work with any one who is interested once it is complete.

I have used IM data before and successfully presented a paper at Leeds and another is work in progress on Agra that we have big hopes for but it has just managed to get stuck after the first draft that has been accepted in a conference.

This thread was started in 2003, Tracey finished a detailed report on Kovalam with some astonishing and disturbing findings, she sent me the final report, but I don't know if I still have it.

I appreciate that you have always asked before, both the site and individuals, before using material. Hopefuly your coverage may introduce more potentially-travelling students to the site.

My wafflings do not include Goa, I've never been there, but should anything be appropriate I'm happy for you to use it and to credit the site. Much of what I write I learnt here anyway!

Gosh, Steven --- that would be interesting.

Seeing your exchange, I wondered what happened.

Probably this should now be hived off to a new thread?

Nick, thanks a lot for your kind words. I also always inform Nadreg via PM though last time we agreed that I could go ahead by simply informing the community.

You know what, we (Anil and myself) wrote a case study for a Research Methodology Book and one of the biggest issues for those who use the message board data is if it should be considered public (like a news paper) or private (like email). Still, no clear cut answers. The new edition of the book comes out in 2009, academic writing is delayed gratification.

But another very interesting point in using message board data is, if you quote someone how do you do it?

Anonymous won't do as any search engine would throw back a verbatim quote from the net. So asking permission for individual quotes becomes all the more essential and I have seen all kind of requests, some still going with anonymous, some with screen names, some requesting for real names and a few like you giving the credit to the message board.

I like message board data a lot because one it gives real insights into what consumers think (more so on an independent message board like IM) and two it is god send for funding starved struggling academicians like me. Makes the playing field more level.

I managed to publish my first paper (abstract online)using IM and Thorn Tree data. Many thanks to all IMers for all the help.

And a very interesting debate about seeking permission beforehand for using message board data here.

Congratulations on the publication, mridula!

That was an interesting discussion on your blog too.

If your paper is ever available online for free could you let us know - I'd be interested to read it.
