Top ten signs that Sonia Gandhi is the PM of India
employment in the west comes from the economy in the west(therefore weak economy/dollar = lower jobs). Employment in india(and other export driven economies ) comes from WESTERN economies. if the cost to the west is lower, the economy benefits. so, paradoxically, the stock market crash is good for employment in india(and also because the congress is a big government party that's going to hire in governmet enterprises.)
After all this discussion the following are true:
(1) Most educated and middle class people do not want the Congress/Communists/and especially Sonia because the reality is that it makes them (me!) cringe to acknowledge that an Italian woman is to be PM after the statesman A.B.Vajpayee. What a comedown!
(2) The Prime Minister represents 1.1 billion Indians and being Indian is a state of mind - not citizenship. That's the reason, Indians who move to any other part of the world remain Indian and a non-Indian passport means nothing. An Indian passport is not the same as being Indian. Can a Norwegian ever become a Frenchman in his attitude, leaving citizenship aside? Suppose Rajiv Gandhi had married a Chinese woman or a Sudanese, would people have accepted her? No! This has nothing to do with Sonia being Italian, it just has to do with her not being Indian. There is no racism here. The day some European or American of 3rd world background is elected to be Prime Minister, President is the day I will accept any charges of racism. Can you imagine Sonia travelling to China to represent India to discuss the border dispute or handle an ASEAN meeting and put forward India's economic case or even at home, if riots break out for some reason - maybe Khalistanis re-start terrorism - can she maintain a non-biased approach considering that she was the one cradling Indira Gandhi's body when she was shot and watched 3000 Sikhs being massacred afterward by Congress goons?
(3) 100 million people can't all be wrong (that's how many voted BJP)
(4) Watch for an election in the next 6 months - nobody forgets 40 billion dollars worth of market cap loss in 3 days trading. Even before this govt. takes power, thousands of Indians are cursing them because the loss affected many middle class people.

Investment in India does not (nescesarily) happen in the stock market. it happens in direct investment in bangalore and hyderabad. Microsoft/ GE put up facilities where they employ (say) 2000 software techies at Rs 10,000( $ 200) each, who would cost at least $ 40,000 pa(RS 180,000 per month) in the US. now, if the rupee tanked, 10,000 Would buy $ 175, and microsoft would be able to employ another 250 techies in india(at the EXPENSE of the US job market...thus saving EVEN MORE money) or save $ 50,000 on the current wages.
Think kerry can do anything against such logic? I doubt it.

I'm just waiting for the reactions when she gives her first televised "talk to the nation" in halting Hindi, that will be a hoot
. Most people have never even heard her speak before!

Albaruni - I am going back to India on June 12th for good! Ha
Bongdons - that's why she is known as the Great Sphinx!

What's the BSE's market capitalization? It's not a huge factor in the Indian economy. As Sonia and Congress just proved, the stock-trading, IT crowd--and their supporters overseas--are miniscule when compared to the overall heft of the Indian electorate. Which is to say, regardless of the performance of stocks in Bombay, the overall impact on the job market is negligible.
Even if American corporations stop funneling money into Banglore, and fewer IT jobs are created (or if many are lost), this has little to do with the economy on which most of India depends.

Bongdongs,
kayko eitna tension mamu (relax man ), I dont doubt your sincerity to desire the best for India, but there is no reason to take the ball and go home just because people have different political/economic opinions than yours.

I'm still amazed that the nation of birth of the PM is considered by so many to be so important.
One of the Canadian provinces recently had an Indian-born premier (provincial premiers typically have much more power than the national prime minister), and, other than a few rednecks, I don't think anybody noticed, other that to say it's about time somebody who wasn't white had a leading role in government.
A better example, though, is Peru with Fujimori. Was it really such a big deal that he was born in Japan? Did he give the country to Japanese investors? Did he place a Japanese twist on all his external dealings because he couldn't possibly understand the Peruvian perspective?

Bongdongs - don't get frustrated. People will go to great lengths to put forward opinions based on impossible ideals rather than seeing what reality is.
Serena, Beach, Alburuni etc. have opinions that have nothing to do with that elusive elment called "human emotion and sentiment". Many of us emotionally don't want Sonia. They keep insisting that Indians elected Sonia (which they didn't). What they don't realize is that if the Congress had put forward a donkey by the name of Donkey Gandhi, Donkey would have been elected because the poor people are voting for the family and the symbol - not because they think Sonia is a suitable candidate. I feel that most of these village people don't even know that Sonia is of Italian origin because they don't think such complicated thoughts. When you have no water, electricity and food, ideas about citizenship, etc. don't matter at all.

That's an amazingly honest and accurate assesment imo.
so what're you cringing about ? sillylilly?
Sonia is only this figurehead, not a symbol of indian subservience to the italian race or something...
We are talking about the INDIAN stock market, aren't we? Not New York, not London, not Tokyo, not Frankfurt. . .
Google turned up the BSE's market cap as 5 trillion rupees ($110 billion). The Dow Jones' is about $3.4 trillion. Microsoft alone is worth $276 billion.
$110 billion ain't a lot of money for a country.
