Top Ten Indian Cities To Visit
I would like to know all of your top 10 favorite cities that you have visited!!!
I am planning a budget 5 month trip of the Northern 3/4 of India and I am trying to figure out the ultimate itinerary. My rough draft goes like this---> Arrive Delhi, then by train... Agra, Kanpur, Varanasi, Gaya, (then up to Kathmandu for 1 month), then....???? I would like to then head south then west then back up to Delhi in the end, (like a big circle) but where to stay? I love the ocean and I would like to visit a good oceanside city. What are some good spots north of Mumbai? Either east or west coast India? You can give me suggestions or just input your favorite all time India top 10 list! Thanks Everyone!!!! |

OH ya...! I forgot to ask...
I will be staying mostly in budget hotels. the under USD $5.00 variety. Is there always a place that you can safely lock up your backpack while you are out in the city? Like a locker or a chest or something like that? I would hate to have to carry my backpack everywhere I go because I am afraid it will get stolen back in the hotel. |

India Cities
I'd say, the Golden Triange: Jaipur, Delhi, and Agra. Outside of that, I'd say:
- Goa - Kerala - Hillstations in Himachal Pradesh (Tibetan ones in particular, that is, e.g. Dharamsala, McLeod Ganj, many others... they have a totally different feel to them). I live in Delhi so I'm biased to hill stations. - ummm... dunno... will let others make some suggestions. You might try looking at the "Destinations" forum for other other ideas. Also, it helps to have a better idea of what kind of traveler you are: luxury traveler, backpacker, site-seer, adventurer? |

I just noticed that you said you are trying to stay in places under $5.00... I guess I can safely say that you aren't a luxury traveler.
In terms of locking your stuff up, I can't respond to that because I live here and that's not an issue for me, but in general, I can't say that I've noticed a lot of places where you can lock your stuff up. Seriously, I can't read... Oceans, huh? There ain't no oceans in the North. |

Hill Stations
I'm gonna have to agree with Mussoori for hill stations. I highly enjoyed my visit there.

I doubt you can stay in a hotel for $5!
What kind of hill stations would you like, Adam? http://www.pbase.com/scaudill/mussoorie Those are some pictures of Mussoorie, its green, not so high altitude, and very Indian. Ladakh on the other hand is more Tibetan, high altitude, and barren. http://www.pbase.com/rrathika/ladakh_range You could also go to offbeat places like the northeast. |

$5USD does seem a bit low. I've stayed in guesthouses for that amount (albeit a TINY non-touristy hill station). In general, I'm a mid-range hotel kind of person so from personal experience I can't say how reasonable $5 is. Sure, India is cheap, but $5? I can't provide an honest answer to that question.

Not oceans in the north, but the most northern ocean spots.
Yes, like, Gujarat. What is the temp like in Dec. there? If not a "hotel" for under $5. There are hostels, guest houses, monistaries ect.. right??? I can stay some where for cheap I hope?? I live in Texas. I can handle any wild and dangerous situation! |

and as for $5, I think that may be too low..you would probably get lunch for $5, not a place to stay.. ![]() |

You'll find such budget hotels nearly everywhere (but it will probably not be too clean and surely not comfortable).
I've never seen something like a locker. What you can do is to bring your own padlock for the room door. That's what I do. I just couldn't yet figure out how I can securely lock the door when I'll live in a tent at the Pushkar Fair ![]() |

OK. I must be missing something here??? OF all I have read, I hear that you can backpack in India for around USD $10 per day. Maybe I should have wrote hostel and not hotel. I am not looking for anything fancy. And lunch for $5 ??? That is how much it costs in America!!! Are we talking about the same thing here?? |
