Maybe add an option "Yes I plan but then I'm OK with having those plans change as I go."

(or "No I don't plan but then I find myself planning on the spot." Or ehm... whatever.)

I plan which cities/towns I [ideally] want to go before I arrive in INdia
I leave the details, such as what I want to do and how long I stay at each place, out. Those, I plan as I go

i planned. we bought our train tickets several at a time, so we had a set route and days we had to leave. it was good for a first trip - took out a lot of the aggro, especially as that was the first time we'd been abroad properly on our own. i won't plan much next time though - i want to be much more a where-the-wind-takes-me sort of trip. god, i'm planning it already!

This is so true. The less time you have, the more you need to plan in order to accomplish the things you want to do/see, but it also means you can find yourself wishing you had more time to spend in some places. As my signiture implies, India has a tendency to alter your plans anyway - in our case a combination of Delhi fog, Air Sahara and the tsunami forced a few changes of plan, but none that we regret. Plan yes, but don't be too fixed.

You make me realise I could be a little addicted to planning!!!!

I've never come here without knowing where I'm going to spend every night.

i just get so much excitement and enjoyment from planning pre-deprature.
ive never been to india, so i dont know how my plan will go.
i know where i want to go and what i want to see before i go home. i also have my 2 month time limit in the back of my mind.
however im open to changes and adding more to the list....not so much taking any away!

there are three trips one makes during each excursion.

the trip you plan
the actual trip
the trip you remember

"Planning" is overrated. "researching" is underrated. I seen lots of people mess up their trip by inadequate research. It pays off!

homemade maps

I really like when friends tell me "where to go" like make drawings... you know, "climb this hill, cross this river and youll get the best chai in India sort of thing" that my friends is adventure! Homemade maps! Its allmost like a treasurehunt!

And if it works you feel like you achieved something that otherwise was out of reach...

Its a choice, if you like to, you will never be alone... You go somwhere for breakfast and start chatting... This ofcourse works best when you vissit places that are neither overcomercial nor deserted...
