I like Sanskrit...
But the my personal favorite is...the language of love...(smile)
and the silent language that eyes speak...these go hand in hand...

The following is a quote from "And Gazelles Leaping" by Sudhin Ghose. It recalls a conversation Ghose had with Moti-Didi the washer woman when he was a child.....

"But which language is best?" the small Sudhin asked Moti-Didi.
"A garden is beautiful, my little brother, because there are many varieties of flowers." Moti-Didi was something of a philosopher. "But who can tell if the champak is better than the hasnuhana or the red rose better than the frail jasmine? It is the same with languages."

this poll would make more sense if IMers list all the languages they have heard and then list the sweetest language. If they have listened to one or two languages, dp they really have a broad enough point of reference?

I have listened to Hindi/Urdu, Gujarati, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Konkani, Tulu, & Sanskrit. IMHO, Bengali sounds the sweetest. May be its because they don't have the "v" sound?

I love the sanskrit chanting in the temples; it calms, soothes, makes me feel fresh inside. Even though I don't understand a word of it! Some of the priests can really entrance with the combination of chanting and gestures.

I guess this is the South Indian 'version' that I mean, as most of my experience is in the London (UK) temples established by Tamil people.

Urm, according to my simpleton's sociology guide, there are like 18 nationally recognized languages, and 1600 variations. Would this thread benefit a little bit from a recognition of those 18 languages? I can't name them..........

(And has anybody here really gained enough familiarity with all these languages to make informed judgments? Indians? Hats off to you, if so!)

Most poetic language - Urdu (ironically though the word Urdu means "language of the front")

Sweetest sounding language - Bengali / Gujrati / Marwari

Most courteous langauge - Lucknowi Hindi

Most lively language - Punjabi

Most sexy language - Malayalam

Most forceful language (rough) - Haryanvi

English is one of those 16 sheduled languages

Bengali is a sweet language because Bengali’s eat a lot of sweets. What else can you expect when they speak?

Only Gujarati’s can beat Bengali’s in a sweet eating competition. But then Telugu’s eat a lot of raw chilly, and still they speak so sweetly ….i’m confused

If I utter the words sweetness and Tamil, someone from Madurai will jump in and say that their Tamil is the pure Tamil and remained me without fail that the Madras Tamil is the ‘worst’

I don’t have the courage to talk about the sweetness of Hindi.
It’s like chapatti dough kneaded by a lot of hands. Sure some one has added a lot of sugar, someone else has emptied some aroma packets and another gang threw in a lot of coloring agents…. The kneading has been enthusiastic though the chief cook is absconding.

Anyway, here the languages are like rivers. It flows gracefully in its territory. And finally all the rivers flow into the ocean, merging into one and lose its individual identity. All what is visible is the endless ocean…that is how India is.

This song’s mixed script is written in at least 10 (?) Indian languages. This is one of the most recognized passionate national songs in India, yet no one for sure understand the meaning of the full song. But people can sing along with the chorus without even knowing what language it is
(if someone can translate ( a joint effort may be), it would be great)

Fairly simple answer, we eat so much of it that it just tastes sweet after a while!
