You will wish sometimes you never went so plan your solace stops in advance!!! e.g. a quiet hotel room, the corner of an empty cafe and if you are lost try not to look lost!

India is camping in the city
Now for something sort of negative:
Unless one is staying at 5 star hotels (haven't tried it) i found India like a camping trip. even tho i have mostly stayed in relatives homes & a couple of moderate hotels. Beds are as hard as camping mats, insect repellent &/or nets needed at all times, water must be purified or boiled, bathroom facilities primative or scarce and always you will be sqatting, (ladies), water must be purified or boiled, food cooked over open fire. ok I exagerated that one, but my sisters in law do cook on propane gas burners that look like hot plates. On the other hand as a western tourist there are many moments of being treated like a vip, people's friendliness & hospitality a joy, india is beautiful & fascinating, i'm sure you will have a wonderful & terrible time |

I really quite drunk at this moment but,
my India is the one that destroys you and seconds later builds up again. The one that breaks your heart and then fills it with the most extraordinary joy that you could imagine. That is my India and it will, I hope, always be so. Regards RTP

Oh I think thats a little harsh tukat.
You can find bathroom luxuries without having to go 5*, These days even a lot of moderately priced hotels have western loos etc, though they don't have plugs in sinks yet,,,,,,,,,,,, And depending when & where you are insect repellent &/or nets are'nt needed all of the time. And of course, I'm sure non of us would want an India which was spotlessly clean anyway,,,,,,, |

hay, for Rs 1000 you can get a decent hotel room in Bombay that is not too far from a 5* , at least in terms of utility comfort. |

How about them mothballs!
Quote:
harsh. Actually now i always stay at relatives homes, these bathrooms are clean, traditional (toilet in it's own closet on the floor) smell strongly of dettol, we did need mosquito spray tho, both in Mumbai & Orrisa. i don't mind these "camping" conditions, as long as i have my own bed in a room with a fan. Are they still putting moth balls in the sinks of hotels? Beach, looks like you snapped my sister in law heating papads! Last edited by tukat : Jul 2nd, 2004 at 22:20. |

Wow!
Those are some interesting bathrooms!!!!
I remember going behind a roadside (Mumbai to Lonavla) dhaba to use the "facilities". Outside, back there behind a screen were some vaugly western style toilets, not hooked up to any plumbing, but full of you know what! Well, I simply had to pee, so i did, just like I was out backpacking in wilderness! By the way, that roaside dhaba food was fantastic, later we stopped at some fancy resort for lunch, not so good, but bathrooms were hooked up to plumbing. |
