The plural of "forum"....

...is "fora", not "forums". Is anyone besides me bothered by stuff like this? I know it's trivial to most, but to me these things matter.

It's "fora" if you speak Latin. In America, where we speak "American" (and not the Queen's English), it's "forums."

We're not big on Latin plurals anymore, except maybe for "data," but no one is aware that the word is already plural.

Hmmmm....sure, I guess that's true, but I wonder if it's the whole truth. I'm an American, and my American College Dictionary shows the plural as both "forums" and "fora". I guess I'm just olde fashioned! Auditoriums, stadiums, addendums, etc. Yuck! I'll take auditoria, stadia and addenda any day.

iyou, those kinds of words are used a lot in Asterix comics, which are very popular in India. But Asterix is a French character so it has not really taken on here in the US Although one of the first things I did on arriving in the US is buy as many Asterix comics as I could.

A Celtic Gaul named Asterix

I mostly speak in Ebonics and just slang so everything I write or do on the site is typed the way I would speak it. What can I tell you

Most people outside of where I live have no clue what I am saying most of the time anyway

It used to bother me and I used to use 'fora' until I checked the dictionary. It bothers other people as well; a recent post in another forum asked whether Latin was dead!

The plural of 'forum' is 'forums.' 'Fora' is used when referring to the public fora of ancient Rome. (The New Oxford Dictionary of English 1998)

Not to worry. I'll find something else to moan about. Other forums await me!

I'm with iyou

Yeah, I get a rash too. They should burn those dictionaries.
And indeed, 'Eats, shoots, and leaves' is cool... and available cheap in India (I read it in the Kinnaur valley, HP, and left my copy in the Sarahan monastery hotel, telling them to give it to a foreigner - ask for it if you pass by!).
