The first western loo in Britain was in the Royal Palace. It was such a great thing, and stopped the stench so well, that it was installed in the audience chamber.

I saw an early version of the squat toilet at Agra Fort. It looked about the same as a modern Indian squat toilet except it was carved out of stone. The waste just flowed down a spout and into the moat.
