Because it is an admission that they could not find someone through their social network, marking them as less desirable; after all if they were desirable, they would have no problems going through social networks.
This is changing however and 20'somethings have no such stigma attached. My cousin met his wife through online personals.

Brishti, I agree that it's perfectly understandable, but as marriage is supposed to be borne of a romantic ideal of two people who have fallen in love (or at least, it is in more recent times), it's not very romantic to advertise for a life partner. I think people worried that it suggested that you couldn't find a partner without widening the net or whatever.
In theory (see Sugar Daddies above )as people no longer marry for money or political connections, they have not had need to advertise for a partner.Cross-posted: Cayle got there first (and better)... |

Two girl-friends (one remains as friend of, now, many years) and a wife: dating ads and, latterly, internet. I recall that my GF and I in London were a little coy about admitting that's how we met, but it never seems to elicit any negative response if Mrs N and I say that we met through a matrimonial site. It's become respectable!

Newspaper matrimonial ads used to be an option only if you really couldn't find anyone... or just for fun. (my opinion...)
Matrimonial sites on the internet are somehow different, internet is "chic" and so is finding your partner online. Looking for a match that "suits" is not only common in India.... agencies like Parship or Elitepartner in Germany advertise with "x % academics on our site". |

British personals are great.
BBW WLTM NS solvent M with GSOH for LTR, MM. Also up for NSA fun w WH guy. Though I have to say, I like best the occasional funny ones you get, like: "Waster, 37, lives with mother. Seeks stunningly beautiful, slim blonde, 18-25. Must like housework." I wonder if they're ever successful?

One of the best ones I ever saw was in a really-cheapo (I don't think it survived) local Chennai rag. It had more misprints than most newspapers can manage in an entire edition.
It went something like Tamil bromine seeks bridge... Actually, the entire column of small ads had obvious been typeset from bad handwriting by a non-English-speaker. You can see a small selection of their gems in my post -->here |

Hmmm...
I got most of that Karuna, except BBW. Big Blue Whale? Bad boy waster? I suspect it's more likely to be Big Beautiful Woman. Can you enlighten us?

I'ts Big Beautiful Woman, although Big Blue Whale is approximately the same thing!
Apparently according to some de-coding site it can also be Big Breasted Woman. I think I just don't read those kind of personal ads.... |

I can't keep Brishti in suspense any longer, so with apologies for stepping on Karuna's toes:

I knew (vaguely) that I was a Brahmin while I grew up. Never asked for or received any further information. I grew up in India (till age 27) and never knew, and still don't, the castes of any of my friends. As far as I know, neither did my parents or my brother. It was simply a non-issue. None of my friends enquired about my caste too. I suspect there is an immense number of middle class (economic) Indians who would pay more attention to the cuurent pay for such-and-such job, the relative cuteness of that boy/girl, the price of onions ad-naseum....than anyone's caste. Apparently their is thing called Gotra (help me out please, Indians with more depth in these matters). I was asked for it while doing a Puja for my son's 1st B'day by the andit. I had no clue. Had to call my parents in India who somewhat apologetically told me I was the highest Gotra (Saraswati, I think) of Brahmin. I still don't know or care what that means. Maybe its the neighborhoods I've lived in - but no one I personally knew seemed to give a f**k about caste. |
