The best quote of Indiamike
Hi
I wanted to write that I agreed with something but after I decided that maybe it deserves a new thread. It could be that other find something other at Indiamike. Sometimes quotes of Indiamikers are clever and witty.
The first quote:
"if life hurts, learn to handle it better"
Is enlightenment an illusion?

He could be anywhere now: You might have met him, be able to help, or give information.

Quote:
That is part of the illusion and the perpetuation of the cycles of samsara: to avoid suffering. Suffering is the most prominent, essential truth of life, but everyone wants to eliminate it, first by not seeing it, not allowing it. You can't eliminate it, ever. But you can use it as a vehicle of understanding, of insight. The Buddha called it the noble truth of suffering. Why is it noble? Because it is at the basis of what you guys here call enlightenment, but would better be called awakening.
So I don't think this your quote was a smart statement. It states what everyone does already: avoiding reality.
Okay, it may be smart, but not wise, or particually intelligent. It just states what our societies and technological advances promote all along. The improvement of living standards, better medicine, less apparent violence, better communication. It's an instinctual thing to avoid hurting.

Great thread, Ivana! This should be very interesting! I love the quote you started with - it's very true. My quote is from the comments section from one of my favorite articles on IM. There were so many good quotes commenting on this article that it was hard to decide, but decided on this one.
"I felt safest in traffic when hanging out with a friendly cow."
How to cross an Indian Road

That was a reference, not a quote. But I see what you mean, you don't want a discussion, just an assemblage of supposedly meaningful statements from the forums. Sort of in a self-congratulatory manner, like saying: "look how smart we are here. We are capable of such wisdom, once in a while."
Quote:
No it is not about "look how smart we are here. We are capable of such wisdom, once in a while" It is about that I think something deserves to be quoted. And I again encourage you to find something by yourself and it could be opposite of my quote of Nick-H. By the way how smart is Nick-H or how is capable of wisdom sometimes is really out of topic.
Quote:
I thought you were better at recognising wisdom!

No. it advocates common sense in human life and relationships. If you die of dengue, or have a ton of caustic red sludge pour through your house, then it is of no use whatsover. But, for most of life's questions, common sense is a better alternative to seeking enlightenment.

What is a memorable or admirable quote?
To me, it's something simple, something that provokes thought.
For example, a few years ago I mentioned how a view from a hotel balcony had helped me to fall in love with India, member Seventies'Hippie simply said "Never go back" (to the same balcony as it won't feel the same).
Very thought provoking words that have returned to me at least 20 times since.

atala has posted heaps worthy of being quoted. If I haven't quoted him yet, I'm sure I will! One from Steven_Ber, though I don't recall the exact words... To see if a post is racist or not, substitute the word "black" for "Indian" and see how it would read then. Steven wrote the book for some of us who followed in his footsteps on the moderating team here.
People leave thoughts and lessons all over the place. They never know who picks them up, how they get used, remembered, even treasured. One day, someone said to me, "Oh! You're the guy who said... ..." Did I remember it? Nope.
