I'd like to add to this (great) list:

Map-unfolding in the street - why is this a crime? Is it so much fun to be hopelessly lost that we must pretend not to have a map in our pocket?

You know the type – they don kimonos, saris or robes to go about their daily affairs, would never dream of eating a hamburger and cringe at the very notion of socialising with one of their countrymen. Plus, your fellow travellers will all agree that you look ridiculous.
Yup, I second this deadly transformation/sin & couldn't agree more. ...... I'll bet Lucy is an Im'er.

I like number 7

I found alot of travelers are condescending towards other ways to travel than how they're traveling.

Another one wich could be added are the people who bring home too much culture. I guess we all do that, but keep it minimal, others may not enjoy a Bollywood movie as much as you do. And stop frowning when you order chai at the local coffe house and it doesn't taste like chai at all.

A friend once asked why I didn't use sari material for curtains. I pointd out that I lived and breathed India, even in London, in so many ways that I didn't need the furnishings!

8. Expecting things to be like they are at home.

If, when I travelled, I found things to be the same as they are at home, I'd go screaming mad!

When certain travellers develope that visible 'air' about them & start discerning/lecturing between/about how to dress, what to eat, where to sleep, means of transportation class & start flaunting their personal 'whose your daddy' guru/philosophies that in their opinion best approximates the 'Real India' experience - then they deserve the full double-barreled wrath of #7 indeed.

Thumbs up

That list was excellent & possibly should be put somewhere so we can easily find it to refer to when the need arises.

Sin #3 is one my hubbie & I have encountered quite often in the past, though not so often recently. After meeting such a person we actually used to say "they've been traveling too long" and the worst part was they didn't seem to belong anywhere anymore--too screwed up to go home & too angry, cynical & screwed up as travelers to enjoy where they were.

I never can find things here once they are no longer current.

I'm going to bookmark it anyway! I have a few people who would enjoy reading it. Not the ones who commit most of the 7 sins, however!

THANK YOU!

Taking budget travel too seriously

The worst of these I met last year was a brother and sister (Americans), who bragged about their low-cost Pushkar hotel room. I think it was so cheap because maybe it didn't have a shower ...

...their clothing was dirty, their feet were dirty, and the sister's fingernails appeared to have 3 months of black stuff embedded.

And they ate leftovers from others' plates ...

I ran into them twice ... and after that, turned my face the other way if I passed them on the street.
