temperature in early january

Hi -

Could anyone more knowledgeable than me advise me on the weather I can expect in early January? I will be in Agra, Jaipur, Delhi and Dehra Dun (I know what to expect in Dehra Dun as I have been there in January)...should we bring jackets with us? We are from Minnesota and know what it's like to be cold, but are unsure of what clothes we should pack.

Thank you!

Yes its going to be cold. (approx max 15C and min 4C).
Early mornings will be foggy, daytime warm and cold nights. Most of the Indian hotels and homes do not have nay internal heating. So some hotels provide electric heaters some just give heavy (sometimes smelly) quilts to keep you warm. Will be good idea to bring sleeping bag and jackets and inner thermal wears.
Jaipur will be warm during the day but will get cold inthe night and early mornings.

At night you will be in a comfortable hotel so the minimum temperatures shouldn't bother you so much and in the daytime thermals are an excellent protection. Plus a pullover to take care of the cold breeze and you will be fine.

I feel like I shouldn't be an India novice, since I've spent almost a year there, but you have all have been SO DAMNED HELPFUL!

So let me get this right, temp 4-15 deg C, during Dec/Jan in Delhi, Jaipur and Agra - is this the same in Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikanor ?

If so, being from Scotland, then this sounds warmer than we get at home, and I assume it will be dry at the same time ? ie no rain or driving wind ?

I assume that the usual t-shirt and jumper etc will be fine - no need for coat/waterproof coat/thermals etc

I was not concerned about the weather, and thus the packing implications until I read this thread ! Oh well, something else to consider.

If you're from MN, the northern plains of India will be balmy. Just take your fall jacket to ward off the chill. Or buy a sweater when you get there.

the main winter warmth problem is often getting enough blankets and hot water (if any) in a budget lodge.

During winters in Rajasthan..the day temp is around 20-23C but there is a sharp fall in temp as soon as the sun goes down. Many places in Rajasthan(shekhawati region) the night temp falls to -1C during the night. If there is no sun during the day..expect a cold day.
So if you are going out in Rajasthan during 2nd half of the day..carry a light jacket with you, incase you return late.
