Early of 2006 I posted this thread about my beautiful village. But due to recent cyclone SIDR, the village almost destroyed & died some people.

All IM members are reuested to pray for the victims.

Mahmud, I am so sorry to hear that.

I think your country gets too big a share of natural disasters caused by weather. I always think of you, and hope you and your family are ok, when we hear such news.

Lyndon, IL - USA

I grew up in a VERY agricultural area of the United States. The village -- and yes, it is classified as a village, not a town -- is called Lyndon and it is in the state of Illinois. Draw a line three hours west of Chicago and it is a DOT on the map near the Mississippi River. I like to say that I'm more Iowa than Illinois because when anyone thinks of Illinois, they think of Chicago and urban areas. When one thinks of Iowa, they think cornfields and cows ... that's me, cornfields and cows.

Lyndon has a total population of 300. There is one service (gas) station with some small convenience items for sale. There are two churches, one volunteer fire department, one police car and NO stoplights. When I was growing up, I was taken to the next town over for Elementary School, then the kids from the next town over came to my school for 5th-8th grades and during high school we all returned to the next town over. Now ALL of the grades are held in the next town over and no school remains in Lyndon. We had fun by climbing trees, running through fields, riding bikes, playing ball and swimming in the Rock River. We also worked and HARD ... most of us ... from the age of 12 or so in the fields - hay, corn, beans ... even picking strawberries.

Things haven't changed much there at all. Time seems to stand still. Probably the only downside is the lower educational standards and the lack of employment opportunities. However, as corn becomes a more important crop, the jobs are returning to the area!!

That's my hometown in a nutshell.

Thanks a lot for the sympathy. We are fortunate that my family members (parents, Uncle, Aunt) were physically okay.

I grew up in South London (population around 7 million). But I have lived for the last ten years in a small village in the middle of Somerset called Middlezoy (population 700 people, 100 sheep,50 cows and a family of mice living in my shed).

Middlezoy means "middle island" as it used to be surrounded by water before the land was drained by medieval monks from Glastonbury abbey. Its a beautiful place in Summer, but mostly damp and dreary in winter.

Is that anywhere nearby Thurloxton? A beautiful part of England.
I am from Dorset (although where I grew up used to be Hampshire), Thomas Hardy country, next to the seaside, very touristic in the summer and also quite dull in the winter. And now I live in Crete. Very touristy in the summer and extremely peaceful in the winter. I call this coming full circle.
