Ahh this is all good advice for me as well. I'm an American Girl spending the summer in Delhi on a restless post-college whim. On reading about the city, I started to get really worried about harrassment and such...but I'm from Chicago. I think I can handle it. I just don't want to be grabbed at while drinking coffee.

Should help with the heat no doubt.

Seriously though, long skirts... What would be wrong with them?

Ah! Missed the jackboots. That's what you get for not being a native speaker; had to look them up now (I had figured some footwear that'd come in handy for kicking, or something).

Never mind.

I could be wrong, of course; just that's how I read it.

Suggest you spend a couple of months in Yorkshire. The straight-faced dead-pan Northern English sense of humour is abosutely brilliant --- except sometimes it can take a week to realise they were joking

on ikley moor bar tat!

Yes, well not the right attire fro delhi, but still, you wouldn't catch a death of cold in Delhi in summer without a hat.

Seriously though, in delhi I wore some knee length wester skirts and tops and felt fine, so long as I was in the 'happening city' areas. ie; connaught place, janpath, khan market, defencce colony... in fact the times i did wear salwa kameez in def col or khan market i felt the odd one out since all of the women were very western and modern, in fact a lot more fashionable than i can ever be!

however, for visiting temples or chandni chowk i suggest something which covers you up a bit more..
just my opinion!

Normally in the tourist friendly areas you will be seen as just another local. It s a different experience here in India and I can tell you your height will work to your advantage but that might not stop the attention you get though. There aren't too many tall Indian women so your height would be exceptional and would draw attention. The best thing you can do is just don't bother and ignore all the stares, it takes practise but you would get used to it in some time. India is a big country and the cultures are so different within India itseld. The south has different culture compared to the North.in terms of safety I think the southern cities are safer than the north, which is what I have heard from others experience. All the best on your plans to visit India
