Uncle_Martin, you succeed in making November in England sound almost attractive! That is quite an accomplishment

But ... don't forget your thermal underwear. Honestly. It makes all the difference between tolerable and glorious.

Nick your signature is code language for me

Uncle_marin many thanks for that detailed info. I am going there for work, would stay somewhere at the university. And I guess it will get dark by 4.00 pm or so but then I am sure I will manage a few things.

Captain, I will try my best not to miss it. Let us see if it is January or November.

Kingstonian thank you I will remember that.

My signature appears to be an error message.

I think I prefer England in January. More chance of interesting weather, even if it is bad. November is just so dull!

Nicj your signature still remains a mystery to me but then am sure it is just me.

Have to apply for the visa sometime in the week ahead and that would determine when would we go.

Uncle_Martin how far are Morecambe Arnside, Kirby Lonsdale
Kendal, Grange over Sands, Cartmel etc are from each other. Suppose if I had just one day free, what can I manage?

And as I said whenever I go I would be engaged for a lot of time in the day. What can I still manage?

(x-posted - mine's a )

mridula, I have no idea. Didn't even know I had one till I got the message!

Back on-topic a bit, I'm not sure about January vs November. If the weather's clear enough of the time (it's been dull grey all day today), early November can be beautiful, with the last of the autumn colours still on the trees.

Kingstonain if this trip happens in November it is going to be the end.

I have been to UK in 2007 in October end and November beginning and saw the fall colors for the first time in my life! It was beautiful.

I don't know why the English weather is so vilified. I find it bracing, though the North Sea winds can be icy.

As for the Lake District, I would go there any time of the year. Well worth any discomfort, in my view.

(Similarly for parts of Nova Scotia. Used to go to a small port there every three weeks. Murder to manoeuvre in/out and berth- frozen stiff most of the time- but I used to finish work, grab my hip flask and go for a long walk. Body chilled but soul cleansed )

And cognac helping with both

I hate "bracing" weather! That is what I have against England!

But November is not bracing; it is dull, and damp, and saps the very marrow from ones bones .

(My error message has gone away... I saw it somewhere else and thoght it would make an interesting signature. I was having an obtuse day. Or an Ob Tuesday?)

this thread is way too big to pile through, so apologies for duplication
1. you need a car to do the highlands, if you havent already worked hat out, bin it. you'll just be milling about with loads of bus tours, ugh.

2. the lakes can be done on a train from oxenholme. windermere is still full but it is nice. i think just about everything stops at oxenholme.
to really look about you need a car again, but it's not essential.

3. king x to edinburgh is quicker than the plane, but if you are going all the way to inverness then it's frankly a lot easier to suffer an airport.
