If you have few hours in Leeds, best thing to do is go into Harvey Nochols Bar Restaurant and enjoy a light lunch there.. There isn't much else to do in Leeds city Centre apart from shopping.

KK let my program for Leeds get more finalized and I am all for a meet up.

KateW thanks, what is a timeout?

The_Londoner thanks for the suggestion but that must be really pricey?

Well here's my two penny's worth...

Oxenholme is the train station for the lakes, if you find yourself with an hour or two wait on a sunday afternoon, just walk out of the station and UP the hill and within 200 yards (but just out of sight of the station) there is a great little Pub serving a good old sunday lunch. Nothing beats the English countryside; endless fields then the occasional pub.

Lancaster is a nice historic city, nothing built up. With a castle that still serves the purpose its built for. you can even have a drink in the old wine cellar, its called 'The Merchants' {ahh.. the old local}. Check out the Ashton Memorial and Morecambe Bay - its supposed to have one of the five most beautiful sunsets in the world (a very subjective thing i know!). Arnside Knott is a nice place for fish and chips, where the tide comes in at an unbelievable rate (Mother nature creating a horizontal waterfall). Lancaster and the area can easily be done in a day, with trains running pretty much every hour to London Euston.

well enough of me reminiscing about home, and promoting my native land.

Have a great time and a safe journey.

Trains on Sunday are to avoid if possible. It's when they do all the engineering works so journeys can involve lots of changes, buses replacing parts of the route etc and be a bit of a nightmare.

Bad things like being stuck in Lancashire could happen.

Time Out (London) is a useful weekly events etc magazine - see www.timeout.com/london

You can buy a copy at any newsagents within about a 30-mile radius of London, sometimes further afield. It'll review the latest movies, theatre, dance, music (all sorts), comedy, and a bunch of other stuff. Also lists organised London walks, some restaurant and pub info, as well as museum & exhibition lists.

Arnside Knott ...now you're talking, you can see significant portions of my life from there, but fish and chips .... the chippy in Arnside was cr*p no matter how the locals tried to talk it up ... but the pies from the shop on the front next to the Albion, they were something else.

Then the Old Indian Army Colonel (retired half-pay)who used to drink in The Albion was, as a card carrying member of the Party, quite a character ..... etc. etc.

Being stranded in Lancashire is less of a burden than changing trains at Birmingham New Street .... it costs 20p to pee, so if you do mridula en route to Leeds I can describe how to find the nearest free and clean public toilet, because the phone box has closed and the nearby horizontal waterfall has a floozy in the jacuzzi....

It is not compulsory. Trains Oxford to B'rum run every half hour.
Suggested trains Oxford to Leeds run every hour.
Direct trains Oxford to Leeds run every 2 hours.
Direct Trains B'rum to Leeds run every hour.

This is on a weekday.

Suggested train journeys from Oxford to Leeds run every hour at 36 min past the hour and if you are unlucky you will have to change trains at Birmingham New Street.

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery are a 10 min walk from New Street Station, (5 min if you use the exit at the 'b' end of the platform ... straight ahead, up the hill , the 'Floozie in the Jacuzzi' will be on your right and a mock 'classical' temple on your left. Carry on to the top of the slope and the Museum entrance will be off the square to your right. According to our friend Ollie, who is on the curatorial staff, it has a must see collection with an interesting and stimulating set of temporary exhibitions. It also has clean toilets and the most (visually) wonderful cafeteria, just past the Indian/Buddhist section.

Do not picnic on this station, or expect to understand the Natives ... English comedians, famed for their generosity of spirit, describe Birmingham as a slum of 1.5m people with a speech impediment ... The water is safe to drink if you are 'local'.
